VT Seva, Bay Area

VT Seva celebrated Earth Day on April 19th – Sunday. VT Seva as an Environmental partner participated in the Cupertino city Earth Day festival. By 9 am, VT Seva youth volunteers set up the booth with tent, table with games, face painting, henna, prizes etc. Banners, informational brochures and fliers were displayed. The VT Seva booth was very popular mostly due to a flash cards game with a quiz on Environment and prizes - gliders, parachutes, balls, whistles etc. Children enjoyed the game and left the booth with a prize in hand and a simple tip on what they can do to protect our environment. Volunteers also promoted the benefits of being a vegetarian and distributed information brochures which had statistics on how 2500 gallons of water could be saved by being a vegetarian twice a month. People were surprised on how a small change in life style could affect the environment in a positive way. VT Seva youth volunteers also did face painting, henna and sold earth friendly jewellery to raise funds for Environment projects. The event was very successful. Environmental coordinators Simran and Moumita along with Devaki, Deepti and her brother, Devi and Sukumar coordinated the event very well. There are plans to recruit more youth volunteers in the near future and involve them in environmental projects.

VT Seva, Washington DC

VT Seva Washington DC Branch celebrated Earth Day 2010 on 25th April. Youth Volunteers picked up garbage at Herndon Elementary School (in Herndon, Virginia) premises and cleared all the weeds and leaves. All 25 youth volunteers were given a book on Earth Day theme based on their grade level. All of them read one page each from the most popular book "Every Day is Earth Day" by Jane O'Connor. The following three themes were highlighted -
1. Don't Waste Water. Get Clean, but stay green.
2. Always use a tote (shopping bag) rather than plastic bag.
3. Turn off lights and computers not in use.
All kids received a reusable metal container/mug/bottle for drinking water/juice every day to save environment from plastic bottles. They promised to bring it every week to VT Seva DC Chapter activities and drink juice instead of using individually packed juice boxes which create more garbage. A tote/bag has been ordered with VT Seva logo to be printed on it, which will arrive in 2 to 3 weeks after which every student will be given a bag, with a promise that they will use it (instead of plastic bags) and bring it to VT Seva DC chapter activities every week.
