VT Seva Bay Area volunteers organize Cancer Walkathon

The Cancer Awareness Walk-a-thon that took place on March 29th was unprecedented because for the first time ever, it was organized entirely by VTSeva youth volunteers. An immense amount of work, dedication, and perseverance put forth by all the volunteers in the VTSeva Bay Area chapter made the third annual VTSeva Cancer Awareness Walk-a-thon a success. Not only did the youth volunteers organize a cancer awareness walk-a-thon, they also organized a full-fledged carnival complete with carnival games, cotton candy, and snow cones.

The purpose of the walk-a-thon was mainly to raise awareness among teenagers that cancer is a disease that can be prevented if the right precautions, such as a healthy living style, are taken. Sandhya Srinivas, a professor of urology cancer at Stanford University addressed the crowd at the walk-a-thon and advocated the benefits of living healthy. She commented on the fact that most of the patients she sees have a form of cancer that could have been prevented. Dr.Srinivas also commended the VTSeva youth volunteers and the crowd (at the walk-a-thon) for taking the first step to ridding the world of preventable cancer.

This event, as with all major events, required a great amount of publicity and planning. The VTSeva youth volunteers first went to each and every store in the mall to look for sponsors and advocate the walk-a-thon to everyone they met on the way. They also embarked on door to door campaigns in apartment/housing complexes to reach out to people in the community and raise awareness about the walk-a-thon and cancer prevention. Local schools were contacted where they raised awareness about this event. For example, presentations about the walk-a-thon were conducted in Stratford to raise awareness about cancer prevention and the cancer awareness walk-a-thon. Local radio station, KLOK, was also contacted and helped raise awareness about the walk-a-thon in the community. VTSeva youth volunteers, as a precursor to the walk-a-thon, conducted a leadership workshop to teach students leadership qualities and how they can make a difference in the community.

The workshop was a success and left many students inspired. The Cancer Awareness Walk-a-thon became a success due to all the work and dedication of the VTSeva youth volunteers and raised awareness about the little things a person can do to prevent cancer.
