Hurricane Sandy Update |
| |
By 4.00 pm on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, Hurricane Sandy
left 8 million without power across 18 states including 5 million New Yorkers.
Damage was in epic proportions. In Washington DC Metro area, storm receded
around 4.30 pm.
VT Seva DC branch met American Red Cross Regional Headquarters located at 8550
Arlington Blvd., Fairfax, VA to offer our help. Ms.Teri McCormick Hinton,
Director of Volunteer Engagement, was in a coordination meeting of emergency
relief efforts of 5 shelters set up by American Red Cross in DC Metro area
(covering parts of Virginia, DC, and Maryland). Teri mentioned that they could
only accept a financial donation, for now, to pay for immediate expenses, but
starting next month when roads clear, they can collect and transport goods
including household items, clothes, shoes, etc. After coordinating with their
branch offices, Red Cross will be compiling a master list of items needed to
help the victims of Sandy and work with VT branch. Since we are the first
non-profit service organization to show up (1 hour after the storm) at their
doorstep, Teri pulled her supervisor, Ms. Linda C. Mathes, Chief Executive
Officer (of Regional Headquarters of National Capital Region), from an emergency
meeting to appreciate the efforts of VT Seva. Linda enquired about VT
activities, and was very pleased to hear about our mission and activities. A
check for $1,116 from VT DC Branch account was presented to her and she thanked
VT for its commitment, perseverance and heartfelt support to serve others. Linda
asked Teri to work with VT DC branch office in collecting items on Sundays from
Floris Elementary School, our weekly meeting location for service activities.
Red Cross has training programs for youth and adult volunteers, for emergency
preparedness, including CPR, logistics etc. and a request was made and accepted
by Red Cross to explore/provide those training programs (at our weekly location
after two or three months), which is mutually beneficial in serving local
communities.

April 21st, 2012
VT Seva, Washington DC celebrated the Earth Day 2012 at Claude Moore Park,
Sterling VA.
The children and parents took a tour of the Nature Museum at the park. The park
volunteers showed and explained about the live animals normally found in the
park trails.
Park authority also explained, How to preserve the greenery, take care of the surroundings, stay alert with
animals encountered in the day to day life like snakes, turtles, beavers, deers
etc.
Children were shown how to identify poison ivy and stay away from it. All the
participants in the park cleanup had a great time walking through trails while
cleaning up the trash. Kids were thrilled to learn that they were walking in the
same trail once used by the most famous person of the United States, none other
than the first President George Washington.
All the kids drew and colored the Earth Day pictures. They also prepared poster
boards with great enthusiasm using the
“R3 theme” - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Thanks to Mr.Srinivas for teaching the children prepare kites and fly them. This
was a lot of fun and brought childhood memories back to all the parents. Kids were
very excited to prepare the kites from scratch and fly them.
At the end of the day, kids went home with clay pots with soil and spring bulbs
seeds, Reusable bags, Certificates and Kites.
VT Seva, Washington DC thanks all the parents, volunteers and members for having
their children participate in this event, despite a busy weekend with many
other planned activities.
We also thank our Individual Sponsors and Business Sponsors for this event.
