Sabercat Habitat Restoration

Bay Area

August 6, 2022 at 12:00:00 AM

Sabercat is an urban habitat park, composed of a creek, trail and habitat restoration areas set in south east Fremont. There have been fossil findings of sabercat, mastodon and western camel in this area. City of Fremont’s community services department has been restoring the sabercat historic habitat along with a crew of volunteers. The volunteers help restore the area's native plant diversity by removing invasive species, so that there are enough nutrients for native plants. Restoring native plants and vegetation also helps the native wildlife and insects thrive as they depend on these plants for food and shelter. The volunteers also help out by cleaning the existing creek of trash and debris that are harmful to the creek habitat. By cleaning the creek the volunteers also help improve the quality of water flowing to the bay.
