Earth Day Event - Native Habitat Restoration

LOCATION:

Seattle

April 23, 2023 at 12:00:00 AM

Seattle Youth volunteers spent the Earth Day caring for our local community park in Sammamish - Lower Commons Park. As you might know Pacific Northwest is famous for different kinds of berries but Himalayan Backberry is a weed which crowds out local native plants. As part of this event, our volunteers removed blackberry thorny plants to restore native habitat. Volunteers also learnt about different berry types and how to spot differences between different types of berry trees.

The seedlings ranged from a variety of flowers to vegetables like peppers, cucumber, squash and a variety of gourds. A group of 30 dedicated volunteers plus a few additional adult volunteers collectively met over the span of 2 months to come together and care for these plants. The volunteers set up a booth and sold the seedling to local community members, all the proceeds went towards Netra Vidyala the school of the blind.

In collaboration with our seedlings event, our Charlotte chapter decided to also make handmade clay pots with unique designs to sell with our seedlings. We used terracotta pots and painted them with a variety of designs. Our chapter made these pots to promote environmental sustainability. By using these terracotta pots instead of plastic pots we can save a variety of wildlife and make these vegetables better for our health.

Atlanta Plastic Reduction Drive & Best From Waste

LOCATION:

Atlanta

April 21, 2023 at 12:00:00 AM

We're proud to announce that Atlanta VT Seva celebrated World Earth Day by making a difference in the lives of those in need. We organized a project to create plastic sleeping mats for homeless people using recycled plastic bags. Our event at the East Roswell Library saw a fantastic turnout of 40 VT Seva youth and adults from Atlanta. Our volunteers collected plastic bags from their homes and neighbors to create comfortable sleeping mats for those who are experiencing homelessness. In addition to making a difference in the community, our participants shared their views on how to reduce plastic pollution and make the best out of waste. It's inspiring to see so many young people take action and work towards a cleaner, healthier planet. We're proud of the hard work and dedication of our Atlanta VT Seva team, and we look forward to continuing to make a positive impact in our community.

Atlanta Alliance Academy Mental Health Workshop

LOCATION:

Atlanta

April 20, 2023 at 12:00:00 AM

During the month of April, Alliance Academy VT Seva Youths participated in a Mental Health week from April 18th-April 21st. Throughout the week, Kate Chirapornsuk (Vice President) and Suveer Jaisingha (Public Relations Officer) created content on Instagram that promoted healthier living and pushed a focus on better Mental Health. Those activities included tips on how to manage stress, a mental health check-in, and various discussion questions such as: “What are you grateful for?” and “How do you like to manage stress?” This gave AAI VT Seva members and students the opportunity to discuss and share their feelings about the topic. On Thursday, April 20th, Alliance VT Seva Executive Officers went around their school to interview fellow students and teachers about their thoughts on mental health-related topics about how they are, what they are grateful for, and how they manage stress. To end the Mental Health Week, on Friday, April 21st, Alliance Academy VT Seva hosted a Mental Health Workshop discussing healthy study habits and learning about managing stress. The workshop idea was created by Rishi Vempati (President) and then was planned and hosted by Kate Chirapornsuk and Aviral Gupta (Vice Presidents). The vice presidents invited guest speakers, Mr. Neighbor and Mrs. Kim Han, counselors at Alliance Academy to the workshop. There, they went over topics about exam preparation, confidence building, and the importance of maintaining a positive outlook. Then, officers served a light breakfast of pastries, juice, and coffee to those who attended the workshop. All foods and beverages were provided and set up by the Yotakhong/Chirapornsuk Family and Karnav Trivedi (Treasurer).
