Youth Led Summer Camp

Despite these troubling times, children continue to grow in intelligence and creativity. Through this online camp led by youth volunteers, we helped foster this growth through various lessons and activities, keeping kids engaged. Each week consisted of a lesson plan with an interesting theme and subject. To name a few, we had a research week, fiction writing week, science week, and paper crafts week. Students from grades 1-5 were all taught according to their individual levels so that all students were able to get the same learning experience. Our youth volunteers not only led and taught this camp but promoted the camp, created the entire curriculum, and performed administrative duties. Both the students and the youth volunteers gained valuable information from this experience that can help them with their future endeavors.

Wellness through Homeopathy and Natural Remedies

More than ever, these challenging times call upon us to be resilient both physically and mentally. Resilience is determined by overall health and wellbeing. VT Seva successfully conducted a health webinar on the approach to overall wellness and the key concepts of Homeopathy. The webinar covered the core principles of health and the multifactorial nature of overall wellbeing. The webinar session was an hour in duration with a presentation by Mrs. Anusha Thiagarajan, Classically Trained Homeopathic Practitioner and Certified Health Coach, and moderated question and answers throughout the session by Krithika Reddy, an active VT Seva Youth Volunteer. With 80 registrants and an engaged audience, it was evident that health and wellbeing are at the forefront in the minds of many! We thank Mrs. Anusha Thiagarajan in offering her time and experience in bringing forth this presentation. We would also like to thank our VT Seva youth volunteers Shreyas Bharath and Krithika Reddy for their hard work and contributions towards this program.

VT SEVA NJ PVSA 2019 Awards Ceremony

“The measure of achievement is not winning awards. It’s doing that you appreciate something you believe is worthwhile”... These VT SEVA youth volunteers put hundreds of volunteering hours in doing community service and they believe that every moment is worthwhile. For some, “it helped them to grow as person,” and for others, the internship at our Tribal and Visually challenged schools in India, “changed their thinking on life perspective.” Congratulations to all winners of 2019 Presidential Volunteer Service Award! Despite the troubling times, you have all consistently shown your impressive dedication towards service locally and globally. It is common knowledge that you all inspire those you come across to be the best person they can be. International Yoga Day

Patanjali Yog Sutra defines Yog as "योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः" succession or silencing of the thought waves in the mind. In that state “तदा द्रष्टुः स्वरूपे अवस्थानम्” the practitioner is in it’s true state of being. Otherwise he identifies himself with the waves. He also states that “अभ्यासवैराग्याभ्यां तन्निरोधः” which means the waves can be controlled by Practice and Detachment. He proclaims “स तु दीर्घकाल नैरन्तर्य सत्काराअदराअसेवितो दृढभूमिः” that after a long and steady practice with great love the goal is achieved.

VT Seva Detroit Youth board members wanted to help out anyway we could during this pandemic. COVID-19 definitely changed our lives a lot. Each one of us are being affected by this one way or the other and hospitals are being hit the hardest and we need to help them out. During this pandemic our only hope is the doctors, nurses and hospitals working in the front-lines to help fight this virus. They successfully completed this GoFundMe page and with the donated amount they were able to purchase 600 N95 Masks 550 Face Shields 2 Air Purifying Respirators 1 UV Decontamination Chamber for PPEs Their campaign was promoted by WXYZ Detroit ABC TV station. Huge thanks to them in creating awareness about this campaign. Livonia Rotary Interact Club was inspired by this campaign and donated $600. Essential Workers Appreciation Project

VT Seva Detroit Youth Board members gave gifts and thank you notes to mail carriers, sanitation workers, grocery store employees, and hospital workers to show their appreciation of their continued service during this pandemic. While many of us are being told to stay at home, these workers have a responsibility during the outbreak to continue operations, potentially putting their lives in danger through contracting COVID-19. Some of these people work behind the scenes without the general public realizing how essential they are to keeping society functioning. This was an eye-opening experience for all the kids. It shows how much happiness a simple acknowledgment gives someone. Over 25 kids participated in the project and touched the lives of over 50 families.

CARY

Nekkalapudi Family's Mask Preperation

One of our VT-SEVA Cary active & energetic volunteers "The Nekkalapudi Family" services to the community. This pandemic brought a lot of change all around, whether it is social distancing, working from home, online classes or essential businesses staying open while others closed. Each family has somehow coped with the situation in their own way. While frontline Healthcare workers and essential workers are fighting to save lives and keeping everyone healthy, many organizations are working towards providing all the support they can to help those in need. As a small gesture of support, the Nekkalapudi family marched ahead in their own unique way. While the father, Subramanyam Nekkalapudi, started teaching yoga online in their community, the mother-daughter duo, Sravani Nuthakki and Sribhaavita Nekkalapudi, started making cloth masks to donate to those in need. Sribhaavita took charge of washing the material, ironing it, cutting it for the masks as well as the ties, pinning them and later pleating the masks while her mother stitched them. These are double layered masks with a pocket for adding a filter. So far they have donated 80 masks to various organizations and individuals. They are working on making more. Sribhaavita Nekkalapudi is an 8th grader at Carnage Magnet Middle School. She is an active VT Seva Cary volunteer and is a recipient of Presidents Gold Award for the year 2019. She knows that this effort is a drop in the ocean. But as someone said - ‘What is any ocean but a multitude of drops?’

VT Seva Detroit CoVID19 GoFund Page Fundraising for Gleaners and Forgotten Harvest Foodbanks

VT Seva Detroit raised funds for Food Banks – Gleaners and Forgotten Harvest Year 2020 started off with unprecedented difficult times with COVID-19 pandemic causing havoc all over the world. Corona Virus has not differentiated between young and old or rich and poor and neither has spared the most influential and powerful of people. Many industries are adversely impacted, people have either lost their jobs temporarily, laid off or have incurred reduction in their salary. VT Seva USA launched a massive campaign across 37 cities in USA partnering with our local volunteers and branch directors to support local charities. As a part of this campaign, VT Seva Detroit has raised over $1626 in generous donations from metro Detroit families who were gracious enough to spend their hard earned money even during the times of hardship in order to help feed the Children and Adults who rely on food banks and community kitchens across the region. All the funds from the donations received have been sent to Forgotten Harvest and Gleaners Food Bank equally. Forgotten Harvest provides 138,000 pounds of food per day to local charities 6 days a week. VT Seva Detroit has been partnering with Forgotten Harvest since 2013 helping them fight hunger and food insecurity. Detroit team has also been partnering with Gleaners Food Bank for the past 7 years. Gleaners provides households with access to sufficient, nutritious food, education, and innovative solutions to achieve a hunger-free community in southeast Michigan.
