Tule Ponds

Bay Area

April 30, 2022 at 12:00:00 AM

Tule Ponds at Tyson Lagoon is a "Wetland in the City." This innovative area is used for flood control but also as a wildlife sanctuary for the many species that live in an urban environment. Since the land is 17 acres it is being restored to the flora of a San Francisco Bay area of at least 1 million years old. Native trees, shrubs, and flowers are being introduced which then bring some of the native fauna. Volunteers at Tule Ponds participate in many activities such as native plant installation (planting trees, shrubs or wildflowers), non-native plant removal, trash removal from ponds and trails, spreading mulch and chips around plants and on trails and much more!

Nekkalapudi Family's Mask Preperation

Cary

April 30, 2020 at 12:00:00 AM

One of our VT-SEVA Cary active & energetic volunteers "The Nekkalapudi Family" services to the community. This pandemic brought a lot of change all around, whether it is social distancing, working from home, online classes or essential businesses staying open while others closed. Each family has somehow coped with the situation in their own way. While frontline Healthcare workers and essential workers are fighting to save lives and keeping everyone healthy, many organizations are working towards providing all the support they can to help those in need. As a small gesture of support, the Nekkalapudi family marched ahead in their own unique way. While the father, Subramanyam Nekkalapudi, started teaching yoga online in their community, the mother-daughter duo, Sravani Nuthakki and Sribhaavita Nekkalapudi, started making cloth masks to donate to those in need. Sribhaavita took charge of washing the material, ironing it, cutting it for the masks as well as the ties, pinning them and later pleating the masks while her mother stitched them. These are double layered masks with a pocket for adding a filter. So far they have donated 80 masks to various organizations and individuals. They are working on making more. Sribhaavita Nekkalapudi is an 8th grader at Carnage Magnet Middle School. She is an active VT Seva Cary volunteer and is a recipient of Presidents Gold Award for the year 2019. She knows that this effort is a drop in the ocean. But as someone said - ‘What is any ocean but a multitude of drops?’

We know that they are there protecting the law, and therefore, we have nothing to fear. During our visit, we met Sgt. Manar, Sgt. Boody, Officer Woodley, and Cadet Morningstar. They were all very cordial and kind to us, very appreciative of our efforts and all community services that we do locally and globally. We had a great interaction with them in explaining about VT Seva, JET USA, and all the activities we do in the Detroit branch. We would surely continue these appreciation lunches or dinner visits to them whenever possible in the future. Also, plan it as a bigger group of Adult and Youth volunteers once we get their permission and the situation is favorable to all. ( Our Adult volunteers who visited include Sudheer ji, Narsaraj ji representing JET Michigan, Srinath ji, Anand ji, and Vanitha. Due to unavoidable reason's Sudhakar ji , Priya ji, Archita ji couldn't make it) Thank you to all the Police officers who don't give up and work day in and day out with alertness and make sure to keep the people safe in our community.
