Durham Rescue Mission

Cary

March 24, 2024 at 12:00:00 AM

Durham Rescue Mission volunteering has been one of our core volunteering events over the past couple years and we have consistently been requested to come back and help. This time was like none other, and volunteers were asked to help serve meals to the men at the Menโ€™s Campus. Durham Rescue Mission is NCโ€™s oldest and largest non-profit homeless shelter. Volunteers were able to help with one of their core aspects of service which is serving meals for the homeless who take shelter at the Rescue Mission. We were able to commit to a great cause and help the homeless community right here in our own towns through this volunteering event at Durham Rescue Mission - Menโ€™s Campus.

These holiday cards are very significant for each and every person receiving them as it may be the only gift they receive during the holiday season.

Atlanta April Cool Seedling Project

Atlanta

April 14, 2023 at 12:00:00 AM

Atlanta VT Seva April cool plant project was a grand success for the third year in a row. Vt seva youth successfully raised funds for the education of blind children/visually challenged children in India. The sale event took place in front of the Indian grocery store, Patel Brothers on 15th and 16th April from 10am to 2pm. Around 60 VT youth volunteers and 40 adult volunteers participated. Youth explained the cause and sold various vegetable saplings, herbs, fruits, flower plants and seeds to the customers. The vegetable saplings were grown by the youth for 4-6 weeks. The vegetable saplings included tomato, eggplant, peppers, gourds (bottle, ridge, bitter, and snake) green chillies, cucumber, zucchini, chikkudu/papdi beans, long beans, ash gourd, chukka kura, dosakaya, and bathua etc. Fruit plants like strawberry and blackberry were sold. Different kinds of herbs like ajwain, mint, curryleaf, lemon grass, betel leaf, tulsi and basil were sold by the youth. Flower plants like canna lillies, hybiscus, other lillies, and chrysanthemums were also sold. Youth also sold some ornamental plants like pothos, monstera and tradescantia. Some vegetable seeds were sold in this sale event too. Several sponsors came forward and donated this year. SOW A SEED EDUCATE A CHILD PROJECT VT SEVA DETROIT FUNDRAISING FOR NETHRAVIDYALAYA KIDS

Detroit

July 30, 2021 at 12:00:00 AM

In the early Spring of 2021, VT Seva Detroit started off a brand new Project โ€“ โ€˜SOW A SEED EDUCATE A CHILDโ€™ with a vision to encourage every volunteer, be it Youth or Adults, to bring the Gardener within them out of the deep slumber of the pandemic year and spend some time outdoors planting seeds, nurturing them and in turn contribute towards a great cause of helping the Tribal & Nethra Vidyalaya School Children in their education. We had a great response from 19 Youth Volunteers who registered to take part in this eco-conscious project. The parents and adult volunteers were equally enthusiastic about this project. We had a fantastic kick-off meeting on the 11th of April 2021 to plan about the different kinds of seeds that we were planning to sow, the finer details of starter kits, types of soils, tools, watering cycles, sunlight vs. grow light, and how to care for the saplings when the weather is still cold. The plan was to get fast-growing and most saleable plants such as Squash, Beans, Okra, Cucumbers, Peas, Eggplant and Tulsi. All the seeds were pre-planted in starter kits before they were distributed to the participants. Once the seeds started germinating and saplings started turning up under the indoor grow light conditions, they were picked up by the participants and nurtured in their homes. During our 3 subsequent meetings, the Youth participants eagerly showed the growth of their plants on a regular basis and were really excited to take the next steps of selling them to raise money for the cause. Youth volunteers encouraged by their parents, did an AMAZING JOB in marketing their plants to their neighbors, teachers, friends and family members explaining about the great cause of this project and how all the proceeds from the sale of plants would go directly to towards the education of visually challenged children of Nethra Vidyalaya and Tribal Schools. Almost all the plants were sold except for few that did not survive. At the conclusion of this project in June, our 19 participants raised over $600.00 by selling their plants as a part of this unique hands-on project. This was quite a learning experience for everyone. Youth and Adults enjoyed every bit of this project and are eager to grow more plants in their backyards. The Youth Volunteers wanted to express their experience through a quick video blog. https://youtu.be/AqzsjEECu54
