VT Seva Detroit Mercado Food Hub Volunteering.

What an incredible job done by our VT Seva Detroit Volunteers from 9 am till 1.30 pm . Together our volunteers packed more than 13,845 pounds of food serving more than 94 Detroit families in need. Gleaners Mercado Community Food Hub is a client choice pantry where children and families thrive and have access to healthy food and an array of services that improve their overall quality of life

VT Seva Atlanta Summer Camp

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. --Winston Churchill VT SEVA Atlanta Team has launched Summer Camp 2022 on June 4th. The is Triple Bottomline purpose behind this camp - A. To productively engage our children during summer time in learning various science and art skills, B. To provide opportunity to our VT Atlanta youths to become tutor and enhance their communication and leadership skills, and C. To raise funds for the Visually Challenged kids of Nethra Vidyalaya India. Highlights of VT Seva Summer Camp 2022: 1. Total 57 students registered in the Summer Camp for Elementary, Middle, and Highschool classes. We raised $7,125 (57*125) for the visually challenged of the Nethra kids with His Grace. 2. This summer camp is youth-led in which more than 30 Highschool youths are delivering lessons with the back-support of Certified Instructors and SMEs as their mentors. 3. Subjects taught: For Elementary schoolers – A. Math B. ELA C. Art D. Dance For Middle & High schoolers – A. Python B. Web Design & Cyber Security C. App Building D. Advance Art 4. Summer Camp Kickoff with Hands-on CPR on June 4th, 2022, in which more than 40 youths learned how to do CPR effectively. 5. Update on Elementary, Middle, and Highschool Summer Classes: Elementary Classes Update - a. Math & ELA: Total 36 students were registered for these classes with 24 youth tutors. We ran 90 sessions of 45 mins every week for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. We have 3 Mentors to back support our youths. Sheet b. Art: We have 36 students in the class. This class is once a week in which students learn the fundamental elements of art – line, form, shape, value, color, and texture. They use watercolors and card stock paper for their art creations. All students made loving, caring cards on Father’s Day, June 19th which was highly appreciated by all. They are learning how to make flowers with paper and various other craft items. We have 2 youth tutors and 1 mentor. c. Dance: We have 30 students and 1 youth tutor, and 1 mentor. All students are split in 2 groups and each group learn 1 dance every week. It’s a good physical exercise for the children. Each week they are learning new dance and are truly enjoying dance classes. Middle and Highschool Classes Update - a. Python: We have 22 students registered for this class. In this class, students are learning to identify, interpret, and apply core programming building blocks in Python code, use algorithmic thinking to breakup problems into smaller pieces and solve each piece individually, recognize and apply best industry practices for program, and interpret, use, and build on existing code and Python libraries. It’s a weekly class and class notes, and recording are shared with all after the class. We have 2 youth tutors and 1 mentor. b. Web Design & Cyber Security: We have 22 students registered for this class. This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to HTML and CSS used in designing and creating web pages. Students will have a complete and wide array of customization freedom in the creation of their own web pages. The class also stresses on cybersecurity theory and the tools needed to plan and carry-out strategic cybersecurity defensive tactics. Class notes and recording are shared with all after the class. It’s a weekly class which is led by 2 youth tutors and 1 mentor. c. Art: This is our Advance Art class in which we have 22 students. These online art classes provide instruction on everything from simple craft project like making cards of Father’s Day on June 19th to intermediate activities like acrylic painting, canvas painting, making flower bouquet, pot painting, and much more. It’s a weekly class led by 1 mentor. d. APP Building: Overall, VT Seva youths are delivering excellent lessons to engage our children productively during summertime. Summer is a great time to give back to the community. According to Maya Angelou, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you make them feel". It’s the feeling of empathy and love that Atlanta VT youths are proliferating and multiplying through this VT Seva Summer Camp in Atlanta

VT Seva Atlanta CPR Session

Atlanta VT Seva team has organized CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) session on June 4th, 2022. The main objectives behind this CPR session is to share CPR insights, provide hands-on training, and assist youths and adults in becoming CPR certified. This CPR session started with a ‘Welcome Note’ by Dr. Madhu Nemani which was followed by Atlanta VT SEVA 2021-2022 Initiatives & Activities video exhibiting various service projects in 2021 and 2022 by Atlanta VT Seva team. This CPR session is a kickoff for VT SEVA Atlanta Summer Camp 2022 for Elementary, Middle, and High School students. This CPR session was facilitated by Dr. Jawahar Gazzala, Atlanta Heart Specialist, Cardiologist by profession and Sumir Nemani, GA Tech CPR certified student. Dr. Jawahar first shared the American Heart Association (AHA) CPR guidelines, dos and don’ts of CPR, 3 Cs of CPR (check patient, call 911, and start chest compressions), what to do when you see people having cardiac assets in public places, and much more. Later Dr. Jawahar and Sumir gave CPR live demonstrations of 1 Person CPR and all children and adults practiced with them using their pillows assuming their pillows to be the human bodies. In the end, it was open for Q&A in which Dr. Jawahar and Sumir answered all their questions. They urged everyone to register in CPR classes and become CPR Certified in 2022, its an important life skill to have which can save somebody’s life in case of emergency. They also offered valuable resources of getting CPR certification from their schools and AHA site. Overall, it was a fantastic CPR session in which we had 45 zoom connections from all across US. It was a gratifying experience for all and its very well received by the audience, especially VT Seva Muscle - our VT Seva Youths.

VTSeva Austin tutors AustinISD kids

Austin ISD VICTORY program is designed for tutoring students in need of individual attention with their homework.VTSeva Austin volunteers have been tutoring kids 1:1 for the last 6 months with a minimum of 1 hr every week commitment from each volunteer. The program will resume again in August and continue for the whole academic year 2022-2023.

Crossroads Community Garden Outdoor Volunteering

VT Seva Detroit once again got this wonderful opportunity to help them this year in their gardening efforts. We helped Bobby and her associate Herb Norgrove in clearing out all the weeds, made a smooth ground for planting, and till the ground using Rototiller. It was such a great enriching experience for all the youth and adult volunteers to learn about using different garden tools and about gardening basics as well. All in all, we had a great time outdoors helping the community and also getting inspired by seeing how some of the elderly people who came there and volunteered as well giving back to the community.

Street Cleaning

VTSEVA Youth volunteers cleaned local streets and parks of trash or litter, working to keep our cities clean! Before Covid, volunteers used to go together and adopt a street. Now guidelines have changed to minimize the spread of COVID-19. It is now an individual activity. Each member provides a date and time they plan to do the activity. Then after they finish their trash picking they collect the following information. Time, date, location of the activity, how much distance they covered and names of the streets/how much trash was collected

Tule Ponds

Tule Ponds at Tyson Lagoon is a "Wetland in the City." This innovative area is used for flood control but also as a wildlife sanctuary for the many species that live in an urban environment. Since the land is 17 acres it is being restored to the flora of a San Francisco Bay area of at least 1 million years old. Native trees, shrubs, and flowers are being introduced which then bring some of the native fauna. Volunteers at Tule Ponds participate in many activities such as native plant installation (planting trees, shrubs or wildflowers), non-native plant removal, trash removal from ponds and trails, spreading mulch and chips around plants and on trails and much more!

VTS Detroit Youth Board Manoogian Manor Senior Center Visit

Our Youth Board members and parents visited the Manoogian Manor seniors after a winter break. The seniors were so happy to see our group again! Our volunteers brought cookies for the seniors. Our volunteers served these cookies and juice to the seniors. Pravin also entertained everyone with his magic tricks. All the seniors and volunteers loved his magic show. It was a great evening spent with the seniors over Memorial Day.

Brown Bag Packing

In the brown bag packing activity, a small group of people come together to make and pack bags filling them with different items such as chips, drinks, fuit, etc. Within these groups, the value of teamwork is built, and it's true importance is shown. After these bags are packed, they go to a homeless shelter to help those in need. This activity really helps in helping our community, as there are many people who cannot afford nutritious food. Packing brown bags for shelters help those that are not as fortunate as us, and makes their futures a little brighter.

Earth Day Cleanup

During the month of April, VT - Seva Bay Area hosted its first ever beach cleanup! Youth volunteers attended the activity at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz California. They started by scavenging the beach for typical trash such as cigarette butts, food wrappers, plastic bottles, bottle caps, and other plastic items. Volunteers cleaned up the beach to improve the coastal and ocean ecosystem to ensure that none of the trash kills marine life or is toxic enough to disrupt the aquatic life cycle! After the cleanup, volunteers enjoyed a quick picnic by the beach to get to know each other and celebrate the day's accomplishment!

VT Seva Atlanta April Cool Seedling Project - Round 2

VT seva youth had a successful second round plant sale for raising funds for education of blind children/visually challenged children in India. The sale event took place in front of Patel Brothers on 21st and 22nd May 2022 from 10am to 2pm. Around 25 youth volunteers and 15 adult volunteers participated. Various vegetable saplings, herbs and flower plants were sold. The vegetable saplings were grown by the youth for 4-6 weeks.The vegetable saplings included tomato, eggplant, different types of chillies, peppers, tomatillos, cucumber, zucchini, bottlegourd, ridge gourd, snake gourd, bitter gourd, chikkudu/papdi beans, long beans etc. Different kinds of herbs like ajwain, mint, basil and chocolate mint were also sold. Flower plants like canna lillies, hybiscus, rose, lillies, chrysanthemums, and marigold were also sold. Some house plants like pothos and crotons were sold. Youth also sold other plants like banana, curryleaf, lemon grass, betel leaf, tulsi and other ornamental plants. It was a huge success. We raised $6000 from the plant sale and It is evident from the community response that people are generous and willing to be part of this wonderful cause of education of blind kids/visually challenged in India.
