Reminiscing Statue Of Equality

LOCATION:

Atlanta

February 25, 2022 at 12:00:00 AM

In our modern world of war, injustice, and rampant oppression, it can be difficult for us to recognize the light, the small victories of equality against the deafening bleakness of our times. On February 5, 2022, VT Seva celebrated one such grand victory: the inauguration of the Statue of Equality, which recognizes the commendable work of Sri Ramanujacharya, who dedicated his life towards the unheard voices of his community and ensured that each person, no matter what gender, caste, religion lives life with equal respect and opportunities. “All are equal before God” was his guiding principle for providing equal opportunities as everyone has equal potential. It is imperative, especially in this day and age, to recognize such trailblazers from our history and emulate their examples. With this spirit in mind, VT Seva hosted a virtual event to reminisce upon the statute of equality and discuss with local youth and adults what equality is, and how we can implement it. This program began with a welcome note from the Atlanta VT Seva Director, Dr. Madhu Nemani and this was followed by an opening prayer by VT Seva youth. Next, the program continued on with both the Indian and American national anthems performed again by our Atlanta VT Seva youth. Following this, all the participants were blessed to watch glimpses from Statue of Equality and then many attendees shared their personal experiences upon visiting the statue. Ms. Aparna Kamatam, JETUSA President, Mr. Kiran Vangala, VT Seva President, MS. SriGowri Koduri, JETUSA Secretary, and Mr. Krishna Kanth Vennamaneni, Advisor for JETUSA & VT Seva shared their experience and message. After this, the program consisted of a speech by Mr. Charlie Bailey, who is running for Georgia's lieutenant governor in the upcoming election. As a former gang prosecutor, he shared his beliefs on equality and recognized the notable work of Atlanta VT Seva. This speech was followed by a video compilation of the VT Seva children and youth describing what equality means to them and what obstacles lie in their path towards achieving equality today. From race and gender to economic inequality, the participants highlighted a wide range of issues that are imperative to first recognize, and then change. Finally, this program ended with an engaging and interactive kahoot, and then a vote of thanks by the Atlanta VT Seva Director. Overall, this event celebrating the work of Sri Ramanujacharya was one of pure inspiration. It truly encapsulated what equality means and demonstrated to all of us that one voice, one person, and one community can be the beacon of light that powers the whole world.

Atlanta VT Seva Bird Feeding Project

LOCATION:

Atlanta

February 18, 2022 at 12:00:00 AM

On February 19, 2022, Atlanta VT Seva youths participated in a unique Bird Feeding project. They believe that birds had a tough winter, thus their promised themselves that let no bird die looking for food in spring. Atlanta youths spread their giving wings first by building bird houses and later putting bird seeds in it on the regular basis throughout the year. This project was an inspiration from Krishna Kanth ji in which he offered bird seeds to pigeons and other birds as an act of kindness. More than 25 Atlanta VT Seva youths participated in this bird feeding project. We collected $120 from this project which we used in donating for 1 day food to the Nethra Schools children for all 3 meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner). It’s a win-win situation for everybody - for the birds, for our Nethra School kids, and our Atlanta VT Seva youths as they implemented what they learned in the Prajna classes of serving all beings as service to God.

Atlanta Lambert Youth Thrift Store

LOCATION:

Atlanta

February 18, 2022 at 12:00:00 AM

On February 19th, 2022, Lambert VT Seva students volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store. This thrift store allows the needy to have access to clothes and other products FOR FREE. Many products are kindly donated, and the products in good condition are put out for sale. We are glad to have helped out there; the store was very neat and orderly. It also had a wide variety of good quality products. When volunteering there, we volunteered in small groups for 2 hours each. Everyone was given various tasks to help keep the store in order. Some of the things we did were sweeping the floor, rearranging products, dusting the shelves, tagging clothes, stapling paper forms, helping at the front desk, etc. It was a very unique and fun experience!
