When the massive earthquake struck Nepal in April 2015 and caused widespread destruction and suffering, more than seven thousand people lost their lives, cities and towns have been destroyed and tens of thousands of people have been rendered homeless. VT Seva CEO Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji reached Nepal on April 30th, 2015 to survey the affected areas and get firsthand information about the devastation. He enquired about the destruction, what the major problems are and which places are the most affected. Due to heavy rains and landslide, there were no proper sanitation and shelter facilities. After initial screening of the place and discussing with the locals, He felt that the immediate needs are tents & blankets to provide shelter and restrooms to provide sanitation. He then discussed with the team about the immediate needs and formulated a plan of action. While VT Nepal volunteers are working in the grass root levels to help the victims, VT Seva & JET USA have set a target of $150,000 (We exceeded it by raising ~$170,000) that would be used towards helping the affected and in rebuilding the destroyed towns and cities. All our teams through out the US have sprung into action to raise funds for the cause. Very encouraging sign is that many young volunteers of VT Seva did door to door campaigns, set up awareness booths and came up with many creative ideas in reaching out and engaging one and all for helping the brothers and sisters of Nepal.

After receiving the award, Sri Swamiji said, ‘Whatever the value of this award is, please use it to build a good school that inculcates and teaches children not only science and technology, but also DHARMA and MORAL from our ancient wisdom. Let the children not be raised as mere machines!’ Such genuine gesture that every single one gave STANDING OVATION! Government officials accepted the proposal and the city is hopeful for happier, good hearted and intelligent children !
