Volunteers and youth leaders channeled the meaning of Independence into action by organizing walkathons, sports tournaments, and other fundraising initiatives to support both local causes and our ongoing mission to empower students from Nethra Vidyalaya and Tribal Schools. While the nation celebrated its liberty, our volunteers chose to extend that liberty to others by helping ensure that underprivileged and visually challenged students have access to quality education and equal opportunities. While many spent summer relaxing, our volunteers sprang into action. They responded to urgent disaster relief needs in Liberty Hills, Leander, and Georgetown, bringing help and hope to affected communities. Beyond emergency efforts, our volunteers cleaned roads and parks, visited seniors in care homes, conducted youth-led summer camps, and supported local food banks. Across the country, countless local service initiatives are underway, and each one is making a meaningful impact on society. Thank you to all our supporters and volunteers for turning the freedom into a powerful reminder that true independence means lifting others along the way. Inika Keranahalli Youth leader of the Maryland VTSeva Branch lead the event, which took place on October 18th from 8:00 am to 12 pm at West Frederick Middle School. Here is a small write up about the event from Inika. We are very thankful we got a very good opportunity to volunteer and help people in need during this clothing drive. All the volunteers of VT seva Maryland helped to sort the clothes by size and type, then arrange them neatly on the tables and racks. It was a bit of hard work at first because there were so many donations, but it felt good to see everything organized and ready for families who came in. When people arrived to pick out coats and clothes, We helped them find the right sizes and made sure everyone got something warm for winter. Seeing their smiles and hearing their thank-yous made me feel proud and happy that I could make a small difference. It was a great experience that taught me how teamwork and kindness can really help others. The event's success was largely due to the support of dedicated volunteers. Special thanks to My mom Ms. Shwetha and Ms. Sobana Vasudevan for their valuable contributions. Also to our volunteers Mahati Konduri, Bhavya Y, Anwesha Parida,Arjun C. The camp provided students with valuable academic instruction to prepare them for the upcoming school year, alongside engaging activities such as dancing, singing, yoga, and arts and crafts that fostered creativity, mindfulness, and fun. Where friendships are real, the marker stains are permanent, and every single day was a wild attempt to fit math, English, games, dance, singing, reading, art, and crafts into a few short hours. This group didn’t just attend camp, they took over. If camp were a TV show, these kids were the stars, the directors, and probably the entire writing team. We experienced plot twists, spontaneous musicals, dramatic math meltdowns, and spelling bee rivalries that felt like Olympic events. Some came to learn. Some came to perform. Some came to quietly draw on themselves with permanent markers and somehow walk out looking like abstract art. But every single one brought heart, humor, and something totally unforgettable. Each day brought new challenges—from teaching lessons to organizing activities—and allowed me to strengthen my leadership, communication, and organizational skills. As the lead, I coordinated with volunteers, managed the schedule, and served as the main point of contact for students and parents. This experience highlighted the importance of clear communication, flexibility, and teamwork in achieving our shared goals. I’m deeply grateful to the parents for their support, the students for their enthusiasm, and the volunteers for making each day meaningful. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Youth Leads’ Reflections Akul Pallerla: “This year’s summer camp was a wild ride of emotions, excitement, and overall fun. The kids were excellent and even though they were rowdy at times, they were well behaved and respectful. I’ve enjoyed this year, so I hope that next year will have the same energy!” Arjun Chintalapati: “Hi, I am Arjun Chintalapati and it was an amazing three weeks at the VT SEVA camp. It was my first time as a lead and I was able to work with the kids to grow their knowledge on math and English. This experience has taught me to be patient and communicate efficiently.” Taara Vasudevan: “Hi, my name is Taara Vasudevan and summer camp to me means that even in the chaos of kids, you can always be happy.” Inika Keranahalli: “This summer camp was a wonderful opportunity to connect with students and help them explore new ideas. Being part of such a vibrant team taught me the importance of collaboration and adaptability, and I’m grateful for the chance to contribute to the kids’ growth.” Anwesha Parida: “Working at the VT SEVA Summer Camp was an inspiring experience. I enjoyed seeing the children’s creativity and curiosity blossom, and it motivated me to keep improving my own leadership skills while supporting their learning journey.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Acknowledgments Thank you to: The students, for bringing joy, curiosity, and spirit to every activity The parents, for their continued support and trust in our program The youth leads, for their hard work, enthusiasm, and dedication throughout the camp -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Youth Leads – VT SEVA Maryland Summer Camp 2025 Inika Keranahalli Anwesha Parida Akul Pallerla Arjun Chintalapati Taara Vasudevan Each youth lead contributed meaningfully through lesson planning, student engagement, and daily coordination, gaining valuable experience in leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving. Given this was our first time at the food bank, we were given a tour of the facility by the manager. Everyone was amazed by the vast storage room with endless boxes of food piled high. Everything was organized and packaged very neatly making it clear they have an impressive system for keeping track of the supplies. Afterwards, we were led down to the packaging room where diligent volunteers were already at work. We were impressed by the dedication of the volunteers and the managers of the food bank. For our task that day everyone worked together in an assembly line to prepare family meal boxes for those in need of assistance. Each volunteer was in charge of one or two food items to the box and passed it along the conveyor belt to the next person. From adding food items to the boxes, unpacking large quantities of food, and lifting heavy boxes, everyone had a job to do. Two volunteers at the end of the line sealed the boxes and stacked them four boxes high so they could be sent to other locations to be distributed. The family meal boxes included milk, juice, rice, pasta, beans, peanut butter, granola bars, canned fruit and veggies, and more. We put together 13,980 meals for families with a total weight of 15,600 pounds. We all enjoyed volunteering at the Greater Boston Food Bank and can’t wait to come back soon! Our primary objective was to create an enjoyable learning atmosphere that encompassed these various subjects. The camp's schedule was carefully structured to strike a balance between learning and recreational activities. As part of their daily routine, the children were regularly taken outdoors for recess, not only to break from learning but also to engage in physical activity and socialize. This camp not only provided a secure and stimulating learning environment during the summer vacation but also fostered a passion for learning and a sense of community among the participants. We had an amazing time conducting this event and hope to continue for further years!! Through the efforts of 12 youth volunteers and 10 adult volunteers, they collected 10 bags of trash filled with items like metals, plastics, and glass. These materials could harm animals and the environment causing a disruption in the ecosystem. These cleanups really help the local community’s environment become safer and healthier for animals and humans. In preparation for this event, VT SEVA Charlotte volunteers displayed incredible dedication and resourcefulness. Prior to the event, they collected leftover flowers from local stores that would have otherwise been discarded. By repurposing these flowers, they minimized waste and transformed them into beautiful bouquets. These thoughtfully crafted arrangements were sold with a purpose - to support cervical and breast cancer screenings. Every penny earned from the sales went directly towards funding these screenings, ensuring that women receive the necessary care and early detection they deserve. Since then, every Sunday, we've been teaching kids the basics of the game. Our goal was to establish a sustainable program that could raise funds for our educational pillar, which supports the provision of food, shelter, and education to students attending our schools for the visually impaired. By participating in these lessons, not only are the kids gaining important skills, but they are also contributing to a worthy cause. With the funds we raise through this initiative, we can continue to provide quality education, resources, and support to those who need it most. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these young learners and help them reach their full potential. Through this initiative, we hope to foster a love for sports and healthy competition among our students, while also giving them a chance to develop valuable skills that will benefit them both on and off the table. With each lesson, we see their enthusiasm grow and their abilities improve, and we are proud to be able to offer them this opportunity. We had more than 200 donors who attended the celebrations! We broke many of the first times with this event. The whole event was completely organized and run by youth volunteers under the guidance of Santhi garu, Kiran garu and all the Seattle EB! Youth volunteers highlighted all the great work they are doing within the local community. We had representatives from Sound Foundations NW who were the special guests for the night. This is the same organization where we were fortunate to support building 4 Tiny Homes so far through our Unity Cup cricket tournament we conduct every summer. On the global front, volunteers talked about their own personal journey including summer internships and highlighted all the 2025 achievements of Nethra and Jeeyar Gurukulam kids! It was wonderful to see kids reflect on their own personal journey through all this years in VT Seva and how they are able to connect to the impact they are creating locally and globally. Also for the first time, we created a web app specific to this event. Photos and Reactions feature were the big hit! You can see the app in action here: https://utsav-eight.vercel.app/. Event though, we typically don't do any fundraising at this donor appreciation event, some of the donors pledged through the app! Thank you! Read More PAST EVENT Volunteering at Sound Foundations Volunteers helped paint and build Tiny Homes at Sound Foundations Hope Factory. We also donated $9,000 we raised from 2025 Unity Cup tournament. This will enable Sound Foundations to build 2 more Tiny Homes. Each Tiny Home gives support for 60 families over its 20 year lifespan. We are tackling homelessness in Seattle one brick at a time! Read More PAST EVENT VT Seva Seattle volunteers spent Sunday at the Hope Factory helping build tiny homes that provide transitional housing for those experiencing homelessness in Seattle. Our team—including both youth and adult volunteers—rolled up their sleeves and jumped into a variety of hands-on tasks: painting, caulking, insulating panels, assembling interiors, prepping materials, and more. It was a meaningful opportunity to learn practical life skills while contributing to a cause that directly impacts our community. Beyond the work itself, we also learned about the purpose of the Tiny Home Villages—how they offer not only safe, warm shelter but also stability, dignity, and a supportive community to help residents get back on their feet. Hearing our youth share their reflections afterward was truly inspiring; the experience deepened their understanding of homelessness and the power of service. This build was especially meaningful because the VT Seva team raised funds over the summer—through our Unity Cricket Cup and Walkathon—to sponsor tiny homes. It was wonderful for our volunteers to see these contributions turn into real, tangible impact. Here’s a glimpse of the work the team put in—photos and a quick highlight reel from the day! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv1cSjW3lh8 Read More PAST EVENT Annual 5K Walkathon On August 24th, VT Seva Seattle conducted its annual 5K Walkathon, carrying forward the same spirit of compassion and service as the Unity Cup. The event was more than just a walk — it was a joyful celebration of unity, tradition, and purpose. From a laughter-filled scavenger hunt to the Utti challenge and the nostalgic game of Seven Stones, families, youth, and community members came together in an afternoon of play, connection, and service. Sharing stories over a picnic lunch, everyone was reminded of a simple truth: we serve with purpose, we walk together, we share love — no one is more, no one is less, we are one team, we are one VT Seva. Like the Unity Cup, the Walkathon supported our goal of building two tiny homes in partnership with Sound Foundations NW, turning every step into a pledge of hope and impact for those experiencing homelessness. We were also honored to have Barb from Sound Foundations NW join us for the occasion and present the VT Seva Service Awards for 2024, recognizing the dedication and commitment of our youth volunteers. The officers graciously gave us a full tour — from the holding cell and wellness rooms to trying on police gear and even sitting inside a patrol car! 🚓 They spoke with our volunteers about their jobs, shared advice, and appreciated our efforts to connect. One special moment came from a Sergeant who said he keeps 3 bracelets from VT Seva hanging in his patrol car — a reminder of the bonds we’ve built. ❤️ 🙏 Thank you to our amazing youth — Hemanth, Akshara, Avyukth, Achuth, Sathkrith, Shreya, Saaketh, Pranavn, Nihaal, Jay, Laya, Sai and our youngest volunteer Sragvi — for making this day so meaningful.
