Our volunteers made a meaningful impact by helping support more than 500 families in the Detroit area. On December 7th, 2025, youth and adult volunteers teamed up at Destined for Greatness to prepare clothing for distribution on December 18th. When families come on the 18th, the Destined for Greatness team also takes time to learn about any challenges they may be dealing with, such as job difficulties, housing instability, or personal well-being concerns. Given this was our first time at the food bank, we were given a tour of the facility by the manager. Everyone was amazed by the vast storage room with endless boxes of food piled high. Everything was organized and packaged very neatly making it clear they have an impressive system for keeping track of the supplies. Afterwards, we were led down to the packaging room where diligent volunteers were already at work. We were impressed by the dedication of the volunteers and the managers of the food bank. For our task that day everyone worked together in an assembly line to prepare family meal boxes for those in need of assistance. Each volunteer was in charge of one or two food items to the box and passed it along the conveyor belt to the next person. From adding food items to the boxes, unpacking large quantities of food, and lifting heavy boxes, everyone had a job to do. Two volunteers at the end of the line sealed the boxes and stacked them four boxes high so they could be sent to other locations to be distributed. The family meal boxes included milk, juice, rice, pasta, beans, peanut butter, granola bars, canned fruit and veggies, and more. We put together 13,980 meals for families with a total weight of 15,600 pounds. We all enjoyed volunteering at the Greater Boston Food Bank and can’t wait to come back soon! PAST EVENT Food Sorting at local Food Bank A group of VT Seva youth volunteers in Connecticut made a positive impact by volunteering at a local food bank, (CT Food Share) located at Bloomfield, CT. These young individuals took part in an essential community service by sorting, organizing, and preparing food items for distribution to families and individuals in need. Their tasks included carefully sorting donated goods, checking expiration dates, grouping food into categories, and ensuring that the items were arranged for easy access by those who would later pick them up. One of the significant contributions to the effort was the sorting of 7612 pounds of bread, which equates to 6343 meals. This vast amount of bread will provide a vital source of nourishment to individuals and families in need within the community, making a substantial impact on those who face food insecurity. The volunteers worked diligently to create a well-organized environment, ensuring that the distribution process would run smoothly and efficiently. By volunteering their time and energy, these youth made a real difference in the lives of those who rely on Food Share’s services. Their work at the facility not only contributed to the immediate needs of the community but also fostered a sense of responsibility, empathy, and civic duty among the young volunteers, reinforcing the importance of giving back and making a positive change in the community.
