Every Petal Carries a Purpose: VT Seva Maryland Youth Chapter's DAV Flower Making Project

One of the most beautiful aspects of community service is that even the simplest acts, when done with compassion and teamwork, can create a lasting impact. Our recent DAV Flower Making Project was a wonderful reminder of this truth, bringing together youth volunteers, adult mentors, and senior community members to support a meaningful cause.

The reflections below are inspired by the heartfelt event write-up from our youth event lead, Divya Putthana, whose thoughtful planning and leadership made this project a tremendous success.

The project was more than just making flowers - it was about creating connections, serving with purpose, and working together across generations. It was inspiring to watch our youth volunteers dedicate their time and energy with enthusiasm, knowing that every flower they crafted would contribute to supporting our nation's veterans through the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) initiative.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the event was the participation of the wonderful residents of Northampton Manor. During our senior center visit, the residents eagerly joined our volunteers in making flowers, filling the room with creativity, conversation, and smiles. Their willingness to participate transformed the activity into an experience of shared purpose rather than simply a service project. It was a beautiful example of how service can unite generations while creating meaningful memories for everyone involved.

As mentors, we often speak about the importance of leadership, empathy, and teamwork. During this project, our youth demonstrated all three. They collaborated seamlessly, encouraged one another, and embraced every opportunity to learn from the seniors while working side by side. These experiences help shape compassionate leaders who understand that serving others begins with building genuine human connections.

As a Youth Chapter Mentor, moments like these reaffirm why VT Seva's mission is so impactful. While the flowers we created will support a meaningful cause, the true success of this project lies in something even greater - the friendships formed, the lessons learned, and the spirit of selfless service demonstrated by every participant.

At VT Seva, we believe that service is not measured by the size of the task but by the heart with which it is performed. More importantly, each flower symbolizes the dedication of volunteers who chose to give their time for the benefit of others.
