  • VT Seva Detroit Youth Board Appreciates Essential Workers

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. ~John F. Kennedy Over the duration of these past two weeks, VT Seva’s Detroit Youth Program has been showing their gratitude towards essential workers: waste disposal crew and mailmen/women . Children ranging from elementary to high school came up with different ways to appreciate the people who are still out there working during these unprecedented times. VT Seva is a non-profit organization which runs on its youth board. Many youth volunteers made hand-made cards and/or gave gift cards to let these people know that they are noticed and appreciated by their community. For us kids, it was incredible to be able to make someone’s day through a small gesture. This project also helped to inspire each other to impact the people around us positively, and take a moment to appreciate the ones who serve us, especially during this pandemic. It is important to express gratitude towards the ones around us and to lend a helping hand towards them. Whether it be through making a card, or by baking large portions of food to give to the people working all hours at the hospital, make sure you also spread kindness and positivity. Some of the youth volunteers’ shared their reflections on this project, and their experiences. Saisha talks about her experience; “Each time we delivered something, it was nice to see the smiles behind the masks. Every bit I do makes me feel really good and I want to continue doing similar things like this in the future". Nikita talks about how it’s better to do something, than nothing. Cheering up front liners, making people happy by appreciating them is just as important social distancing and keeping ourselves safe. Risha talks about how it’s astonishing that a group of youth volunteers can make someone else’s day through simple gestures, and be able to show these people that they are recognized by their community. Ish and Adi also made homemade cards and felt happy to see the trash disposal workers happy. Sadana and Srihari discuss how it was amazing to make such a small gesture, nothing compared to the hard and risk-filled work they do, and make someone very happy with it. Teja and Arya , who are youth volunteers, describe how happy they felt to see how they made someone else happy, and hopes to put more smiles on peoples faces during this pandemic. Oviya and Harish also participated talking about how they thoroughly enjoyed being a part of such an inspiring community and how satisfying it is to make someone smile. Ria and Vaibhav feel very thankful to be able to make an impact on their community. Sanjana and Kaavya talk about how happy they were to make someone smile. Aishani and Amitesh felt very happy supporting the community. Anjana , Shriya and Nikhil said their mail carriers felt so happy and appreciated the gesture. Smriti and Sohan feel happy to be part of an inspiring effort like this one. Rashmita and Abhinav also mentioned how they took all of the necessary precautions and were still able to inspire people in their community. All of the volunteers feel thankful that they got to make someone feel important and to be able to encourage others to spread gratitude too. Overall, all of the volunteers agree that it was a new and fun experience, and it felt wonderful to make someone happy, and make them feel better about themselves. It shows how a simple gesture can have such a great impact, and how it is important to appreciate those who work hard for you everyday, but are rarely ever acknowledged for it. Some may say that during a crisis like this giving 20 bucks to someone will not make any difference, but in the VT Seva Detroit Youth group alone, around 25 kids have participated so far and impacted more than 50 families . And it only takes one person to make a difference. Everyone can make someone’s day, make them feel important, and make them feel noticed by making a small effort during the day just like these volunteers. Not only is staying safe and taking precautions important, but spreading positivity is just as important to help everyone recover from this disaster together. VT Seva is a non-profit volunteer organization which runs mainly through its youth board, and raises money mainly for the education of blind and tribal children. But it also raises money for other causes such as cancer awareness camps and disasters such as the one going on right now. Writers : Nikita Talwar and Risha Narayanan Video : Srujan Patil

VT Seva Detroit Youth board responding to the present Covid-19 Pandemic came together to do something for the society. The Youth Board formed a year ago inspired by VT Seva's empowerment of youth leadership. The Youth volunteers started a Fundraiser for St. Mary Mercy Hospital. In the process they featured in the WXYZ-TV News Channel . From VT Seva Detroit Youth Board : We want to help out with the COVID-19 pandemic in any way possible. We are a group of students who are members of the VT Seva Detroit Youth Board. VT Seva is a nonprofit volunteering organization. We chose to support St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, M I during this pandemic. The virus has changed our lives in ways that were unimaginable just a few months ago. As the highly contagious virus spreads and infects more people, hospitals become unable to keep up with the demand. Hospitals need funds for supplies to continue to effectively treat all the patients that fill their rooms. This virus is heavily affecting all of our medical personnel on the front lines, and it’s up to us to support them. Michigan has the third most confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the US, and Wayne County has the most cases in Michigan. Aside from the City Of Detroit, Livonia, a city in Wayne County, has been hit the hardest with over 300 cases in the first three weeks itself. One of our biggest hospitals here, St. Mary Mercy, is in need of help, and it is our job to help the medical professionals stay safe and save lives. St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, Michigan, needs all the help they can get, and we appreciate you stopping by our page. It would mean so much to us if you could support them and let them continue to treat the heavily affected city of Livonia. Please feel free to share this and help it reach as many people as possible. Every little donation counts and your donations will help this hospital continue to save lives and treat the people that need it. • Sisters sponsor 3D science models to their brothers and sisters at Netra Vidyalaya School in India

Just like the seedlings that grow into big plants and bear fruits and vegetables, we wish that the dreams of the kids at Netra Vidyalaya will also be successful and fruitful. We hope and pray that we get more of such opportunities to serve and contribute in the future. Once again, big thanks to VT Seva for all the support and encouragement throughout the project. We are Aduri sisters - Meghana Aduri (7th grade) and Keerthana Aduri (4th grade) from Dallas, Texas. With the help, support and encouragement from VT Seva, we started the " Seedlings for Education " initiative in January 2021 with the goal of sponsoring 3D science models to our brothers and sisters at Netra Vidyalaya School in Vizag, AP, India. WHY WE DID WHAT WE DID: After we came to know about the challenges faced by the students at Netra Vidyalaya in pursuing education in the field of sciences, we decided to do something from our part to help them. We discussed various options with our parents and came up with the idea of growing seedlings, esp Indian vegetable seedlings as many in the community take very good care of the vegetable plants that they grow every year and we related that to taking care of the needs of the kids. Seedlings for Education initiative would not only benefit in raising funds to sponsor the 3D models, but it will also encourage and help kids, volunteers and sponsors grow more plants which will have a positive impact on our environment. HOW WE DID: We did not think that we were growing seedlings, but we considered each of the seed that we sowed as a dream and aspiration of the kids at Netra Vidyalaya and we have put in all our time and efforts to take utmost care of them. It was our first experience to grow seedlings, but the motivation behind the cause to help the kids inspired us to go ahead with this massive project. We had more than 100 volunteers registered for the initial phase when the initiative was announced, which was very encouraging and overwhelming. We grew about 2000 seedlings in our house in 3 phases of 500, 1000 and 500 each. We talked to these seedlings daily, watered them and played music for them - just like a mother that takes care of her baby. We were amazed and excited to see how the seedlings responded and grew into healthy saplings within few weeks. At about 3 weeks’ time after sprouting, during the first week of March, we handed over these dreams and aspirations to the VT Seva Dallas volunteer coordinators who in turn distributed them to other volunteers, friends and family members so that they can take care of them and donate them to raise funds for the cause. We are excited to inform that we far exceeded our own expectations for the first year of the initiative. We raised more than $5300 from the project and these funds would go a long way in providing the required 3D science models to the kids at Netra Vidyalaya.

  • High Schooler raises 3500+ dollars for India Covid Relief and empowering visually challenged

My name is Nigama and I am going to 10th grade. A month ago, my mom and I were planting seeds in our backyard, like every year around this time, but after seeing the enormity of the struggle India is facing, we decided to start a fundraiser at our home. After planting our seeds, and growing them for a month, my mom and I took care of the seedlings and eventually arranged them in our garage for sale. With the large number of orders we received, we reached out to our friends and local farms that provided vegetable/flower saplings. I made a google form to keep track of the orders and started by circulating our message throughout the community, and with an overwhelming response, we decided to open up our fundraiser to many more people to promote and help fundraise for - 1. 3D Science Models for visually challenged kids studying at Nethra Vidyalaya, supported by VT Seva Dallas' Seedlings for Education project 2. Covid relief in India to provide support to the affected families 3. Animal Shelter in Dallas Metroplex We surpassed our goal by reaching over 260+ orders over the past month! Throughout these several weeks, I have gotten to interact with so many people and spread awareness about VT Seva’s cause, pursue my interest in gardening, and turn our passion into a good objective. Overall, we successfully reached our aims and raised $3535! I am so thankful I got to take part in such an enlightening opportunity by serving my community here as well as outreach projects in India.
