- VT SEVA Seattle Virtual Reading Report Sessions
Amidst the recent pandemic, VT SEVA’s Seattle branch came together to create Virtual Reading for Kids , a program made to support families affected by the stay-at-home order in which entertainment, daycare, and other child services were limited. Through the program, we not only provided a fun and engaging activity for kids bi-weekly, but also raised money for VT SEVA’s Covid Relief Fund from participating families. Twice a week, volunteers of all ages came to read stories from picture books to Indian classic comics to short chapter books over Webex. Through our program’s webpage, children from across the nation were able to easily join sessions from our online links and enjoy a virtual read-along from the comfort of their home. Through our efforts we were able to attract kids from Washington, Ohio, California, North Carolina, Texas, and many more. Furthermore, we attracted many passionate volunteers ranging from adults to elementary students eager to converse and support others in their community during these stressful times — in turn, increasing VT SEVA’s footprint across households previously unaware of the organization. Madhavi Vivek VT SEVA Seattle Hello, my name is Madhavi Vivek and I am a rising senior at Liberty High School in Renton, Washington. In my free time I like to swim, attend hackathons, and travel. I joined VT Seva in 2016 and have been a part of the youth board ever since. I was drawn to VT Seva because I resonated with their mission statement and believed they could provide me with many opportunities to work alongside like-minded individuals passionate about giving back to their community through service. I am glad to be a part of this team and be able to contribute through programs like the Virtual Reading Program in which I led this year. Here are some photos from our sessions: (view more on our website at https://virtualreadingforkids.weebly.com/more.html )
- Virtual Coding With Compassion Program by VT Seva Seattle !!
Amidst the recent pandemic, VTSEVA’s Seattle branch collaborated to create Coding With Compassion, an online program made to support students affected by the stay-at-home order and challenge them to continue using their problem-solving and interpersonal skills. Through this program, we taught 100 students various programming languages and leadership skills needed in the work industry and raised money to provide underprivileged children with a free education. Thank you to our flawless teachers and volunteers ( Kiran Vanagala, Santhi Kanumuri, Sethu Srinivasan, Praveen Bantwal, Upendar Sandadi, Pavan Vovveti, Priyatham Burgadda, Uttam Indukuri, and Aditi Srinivasan) who put in countless hours making lesson plans for different age groups throughout the entire summer. We created weekly curriculum's, slideshows, and various activities that would keep the kids engaged in both aspects: coding and leadership. Twice a week, teen and adult volunteers taught students coding languages such as Python, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript over a course of a few months on Webex. Along with these technical courses, a leadership curriculum was incorporated to equip students with the essential interpersonal skills required to work in a group environment successfully. Children from across the nation were able to sign up through our website and enjoy coding/leadership lessons from the comfort of their homes. It was remarkable to know that our lessons on both these disciplines would serve as a strong foundation for the kids’ diverse future goals and endeavors regardless of their chosen field. With our online presence, we were able to attract kids from Washington, Texas, California, Nevada, Ohio, North Carolina, and many more. Furthermore, many participating kids were motivated to follow in the footsteps of our volunteers and support others in their community, increasing VTSEVA’s footprint across households throughout the nation. Thank You, Aditi Srinivasan VTSEVA Seattle ! I am Aditi, and I have been a youth board Lead at VTSEVA Seattle for four years. At first, I joined this unique organization as a selfless volunteer after being inspired by my grandfather. He continued to help his community by being the Secretary of the Indian Red Cross even during his retirement life. What really drove me to stay committed for multiple years at VTSEVA was the open-mindedness of the adults who respected and incorporated the youth’s ideas into our events and the variety of societal issues we address: education, healthcare, disaster relief, etc. Coding has always been one of my interests. I have recently been passionate about conducting research at the intersection of computer science and linguistics to create technology that effectively bridges gaps in communication. It was such an honor to establish and organize the Coding With Compassion program alongside our adult volunteers and pass on my programming knowledge to such bright and promising kids. The fact that the money we raised through this program helps underprivileged children pursue their education makes this experience twice as satisfying! Volunteering shouldn’t be about the service hours required for school or the National Presidential Service Award. It should come from the heart, and I hope to see many more youth join VTSEVA, bring ideas to the table, and create a memorable impact on our community! Our Team
- Virtual Dancing Classes by VT Seva Seattle !!
VT Seva Seattle Youth team conducted several virtual classes during this pandemic. They worked to in ensuring that all family members are engaged and entertained during the stay-at-home orders. One of the classes was virtual dance lessons. Every Saturday, volunteers from Seattle’s youth board would choreograph and virtually teach portions of a song to people of all ages. With classes being virtual, our program was able to attract participants from across the nation, including states like Washington, California, Georgia, and many more. By offering an opportunity to engage with others virtually, VT Seva gained the attention of many participants ( Parents and Kids ) for their unique approach and their estimable efforts. As a result, VT Seva gained many new youth and adult volunteers eager to support our organization's mission. Thank you to all of those that participated in the Dance With Us program. We hope that you are all doing well and staying safe. Thank you, Esha Bantwal VT Seva Seattle Hello everyone! My name is Esha Bantwal and I have been on VT Seva’s youth board for two years and have been a volunteer for several more. I have also been a part of VT Seva’s unique summer internship opportunity in which groups of young volunteers get to visit the Indian remote villages that VT Seva supports. Our purpose was to teach the children there English and instead we learned a lot more lessons about life! My involvement with VT Seva started because of my visits to India. Unfortunately, there are pockets of the population that do not get the necessities they should have. Seeing these people and the circumstances they live in for years on end pushed me to make a change. And, I decided to start small by joining VT Seva. VT Seva’s unique mission and my own desire to help those in need worldwide attracted me to this organization. It is not only Indian underprivileged and visually-challenged children that VT Seva supports, but also people (of all ages and ethnicities) suffering from natural disasters, diseases (e.g. breast cancer), and poverty. Through VT Seva I have had wonderful opportunities to serve my community; one of them being through dance. Dance has been something I’ve invested my time into since I was seven years old. It’s something I enjoy doing and has become a part of my routine. That being said, I’m very happy that I got to be a part of Dance with Us alongside Aditi, another youth board volunteer, to teach and engage others through dance. In addition to dance and other activities, volunteering has become a part of my routine. And, the fact that many young dancers who joined this summer’s virtual dance program are eager to do the same makes it all the better. Young leaders are always welcome at VT Seva and I hope to see more of you all joining soon! Few glimpses of the classes are below
- Virtual Cooking Classes by VT Seva Seattle Youth
In the course of the past few months, Seattle's VT Seva Youth Board held virtual cooking classes every week to support families across the country during the pandemic. Our mission through this program was to alleviate stress among families by hosting a welcoming and interactive environment online. Through our Virtual Cooking Class program, we created a safe space where communities could come together to socialize and share their experiences over great cooking and baking recipes. Every Saturday afternoon, we held a cooking class hosted by our many VT Seva Youth volunteers. Each volunteer shared one of their favorite recipes to others across the nation, allowing for families to adopt new cooking techniques and recipes to keep them engaged at home. We were delighted to meet with participants from across the country, prompting us to expand our volunteers and continue our classes. Through this successful program, we were able to elicit interest in not only our program, a fun and productive way to spend time during the stay-at-home order, but our VT Seva organization as well. Thank you, Sumedha Kanumuri VTSEVA Seattle Website: https://virtualcookingclasses.weebly.com/ Hi! My name is Sumedha Kanumuri and I am a rising junior at Skyline High School in Sammamish, WA. I have been part of the Seattle VTSEVA Youth Board for about 1 year now and I have participated and volunteered in several annual events and fundraisers these past years. Outside of VTSEVA, I enjoy rowing and being creative whether it’s through drawing, small projects or cooking. I love to cook and bake at h ome and I was inspired to lead the VTSEVA Virtual Cooking Classes to share some of my recipes as well as learn new ones from other kids. I enjoyed creating a safe, virtual environment in order for kids to have fun and also bring a smile to their faces during these hard times. As a person, I strongly believe in having an interactive and strong community whether it is virtually or in-person. My experiences with the VTSEVA youth board and the cooking classes has helped me with building that goal. Pictures from our Virtual Classes:

- My first volunteering experience with VT Seva
On a day not so long ago, I was doing my school homework. Suddenly, my father asked me if I wanted to volunteer with VT Seva on the next Sunday, March 8, 2020. I asked, “I have a Prajna class until 12:00. How will I be able to go?” He said this event will start at 1:00, so if I wanted to go, I could go. I was happy that I would be able to start my volunteering hours, and people will benefit from my work. That Sunday, after the class was over at 12:00, we drove to Midway United Methodist Church, since that was where we would be doing our service. The organization was called Meals for Grace. At the church, Our job was to pick out the good fruits and vegetables in the packs and pack them up in boxes for the poor. Adithya and I worked on the vegetables. We volunteered to deliver the food. Soon, we reached the family’s home and gave them food. They were very thankful. After I came home, I felt great that I helped a family. I want to do many more activities like this. Thank you VT Seva and Meals for Grace for giving me this wonderful opportunity!
- Who is benefiting with my volunteering?
My name is Charishma Bijum. I am a rising freshman who will be going to Alliance Academy for Innovation. I have been a part of VT Seva Atlanta since March 2019. Volunteering through VT Seva has taught me a variety of lessons and has helped me form friendships with people who I have never met. In the last year, I have learned to become a better person, and volunteering has inspired me to be grateful for what I have. There are a variety of events that I enjoy such as packaging food at Open Hands of Atlanta, organizing an American Red Cross Blood Drive, and packing food for celebrating International Yoga Day. VT Seva has motivated me to volunteer in my community and help those in need. VT Seva has helped many in need and has provided many people with hope. Volunteering indirectly helped me to become a happier person. In conclusion, volunteering has changed me to become a passionate and thankful young adult.
