  • VT Seva Detroit First Annual Soccer Tournament : A Grand Success

During the brief meeting after our successful RAAS 2018 event, we were brainstorming about adding newer events to attract more participation and awareness about VT Seva and we hit upon this idea of conducting a Kid’s Soccer Tournament to benefit the Netra Vidyalaya children. It is then when we started this 7-month long journey of VT Seva – ‘Soccer For A Cause’ tournament. It was quite a challenge initially to assess the interest, availability of fields, identifying the age groups, many other logistics since it was a first time for all of us to conduct a tournament of this size. Hence, we decided to send out a Survey form to seek everybody’s opinion and interest. Due to several reasons such as summer vacation time for the kids, field and volunteers’ availability, July 13th 2019 was the chosen to be the day of the Tournament based on the Survey feedback. We had overwhelming responses from kids, parents and volunteers in making the event a successful one without any hiccups. We were thrilled to see players signing up till the last minute at the venue. Total about 45 kids registered. We played 3 round robin games for 6-9yr olds and then one decider, 2 games for 10-12 yr olds and 1 big game for High Schoolers vs Adults...you could obviously guess the result of that game All in all, it was a fun filled day of Soccer with some mouthwatering snacks - Pizzas, Samosas, Ice Cream, Lemonade, Mango Lassi, Gatorade & plenty of water to keep the players & parents going. All proceeds go to Netra Vidyalaya from VT Seva Detroit RAAS event. We definitely look forward to making it a bigger event in the following years! Thank you UV ShutterKlick Photography , Vathsal Ravi for wonderful pictures. Thank you Milkster Novi and Thank you Total Sports Novi for the facility. Click here for more pictures

Overall, the evening was enjoyable and rewarding to everyone present.

  • Memorial Day Volunteer Service in NJ - A sweet recount by one of our Star volunteers

It's always ironic when serving local communities ends up being serving food to the needy. On this occasion VT Seva went out to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen where we handed out meals to hundreds of the local population. The guests ranged from small children to the elderly, all graciously accepting of our efforts. Interestingly enough, everyone enjoyed the dessert portion of their meals - I guess sweetness is not something you really grow out of! While I was standing in the line to pick up the next tray of food to be served, a gentleman struck up a conversation with me. "Are you all college students?" I explained that while the younger volunteers were all high schoolers, I was the only higher education student, that too in medical school. Curious he asked where I studied and why I was helping out. I mentioned that since I study in the Camden/Philadelphia area the majority of my future patient population would be similar to the guests of the food kitchen. Immediately the man's face lit up and he smiled. Then he had a more important question, "how do you say your name?" No matter what age we are or what backgrounds we come from, there is one thing that is common to us all - we need food. Such experiences not only help us develop lasting relationships with communities, they also expose us to a side of life we might not otherwise encounter. I likely will not see that man in the future again but if I do I would be happy to shake his hand and tell him my name again. Bharani K Puskur Bharani is one of our star volunteers from New Jersey and is a recipient of US President's Volunteer Service Award for his outstanding volunteer service in the community.

VT Seva CEO Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swami was honored ‘ Uthama Nagarika Sanman ’ from the Government of Nepal for the yeoman services rendered to country of Nepal. Mr. Jeevan Ghimire, Minister of Education and Social Development and Mr. Bhim Parajuli, Mayor of Viratnagar presented the award. During the occasion, Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji inaugurated the Biography of the Prime Minister of Nepal Lt. Mr. Sriman Nagender Prasad Rijal. GLIMPSE OF OUR SERVICES IN NEPAL Provided 5000+ tents and blankets as immediate relief for Nepal Earthquake relief, re-built a permanent school ''Nandi Secondary School" in Naxal, Kathmandu, Nepal with about $170,000 (USD) for the children and houses for the victims Blood Donation Camps for past 10 years at Purano Baneshwor Height, Kathmandu, Nepal Women Health Camps in Kathmandu and Bharatpur for Cancer Screening (VIA) and Eye Checkups Trauma Relief Camps for the Orphan Children who lost parents in the violent fight between Nepal Army and Maoists Free clean drinking water distribution camps in multiple areas of Kathmandu, Nepal Youth led Community Service events in local community, Kathmandu, Nepal When the massive earthquake struck Nepal in April 2015 and caused widespread destruction and suffering, more than seven thousand people lost their lives, cities and towns have been destroyed and tens of thousands of people have been rendered homeless. VT Seva CEO Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji reached Nepal on April 30th, 2015 to survey the affected areas and get firsthand information about the devastation. He enquired about the destruction, what the major problems are and which places are the most affected. Due to heavy rains and landslide, there were no proper sanitation and shelter facilities. After initial screening of the place and discussing with the locals, He felt that the immediate needs are tents & blankets to provide shelter and restrooms to provide sanitation. He then discussed with the team about the immediate needs and formulated a plan of action. While VT Nepal volunteers are working in the grass root levels to help the victims, VT Seva & JET USA have set a target of $150,000 (We exceeded it by raising ~$170,000) that would be used towards helping the affected and in rebuilding the destroyed towns and cities. All our teams through out the US have sprung into action to raise funds for the cause. Very encouraging sign is that many young volunteers of VT Seva did door to door campaigns, set up awareness booths and came up with many creative ideas in reaching out and engaging one and all for helping the brothers and sisters of Nepal. After receiving the award, Sri Swamiji said, ‘Whatever the value of this award is, please use it to build a good school that inculcates and teaches children not only science and technology, but also DHARMA and MORAL from our ancient wisdom. Let the children not be raised as mere machines!’ Such genuine gesture that every single one gave STANDING OVATION! Government officials accepted the proposal and the city is hopeful for happier, good hearted and intelligent children !

  • Know about Saurav Gandhi

Saurav Gandhi won Gold in 2017 and Bronze in 2016 for his outstanding volunteering contribution. Why I joined VT Seva I have been volunteering for 4 years I joined VT Seva to serve the community using the knitting skills I acquired over the summer of fourth grade. I was a NICU baby at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, so I wanted to give back to the hospital. My favorite activity was sewing Pillowcase dresses for Girls in Africa, sewing and assembling craft kits for the Giving Tree at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, and Sandwich Seva.
