  • VT Seva Dallas 10th Annual Cancer Walkathon - 2020

VT Seva Dallas conducted its 10th annual Cancer Walkathon, where participants walk every October to increase awareness of Cervical Cancer. With the unprecedented times this year the event was unique as it was conducted virtually. Every year we would have 5K - 10K walk but this year we had an unprecedented accomplishment of walking about 20,000 miles, putting in the order to double our goal of 10,000 miles walked! What is the primary Goal ? Spread awareness on different types of cancer and aid globally with prevention. This year awareness for Cervical Cancer was the main goal, as about 300,000 women in 2018 alone suffered and died from this disease. How is the cause supported? Over the last ten years, VT Seva Dallas has raised funds to support women in need and organize health screening camps in remote villages of India. Thus far we have made a difference by conducting 200 camps which have screened more than 50,000 individuals. Funds raised are also used to support procure infrastructure such as mobile diagnostic bus, digital colposcopes, screening kits, blood cell counting equipment and many more to support the camps. To help improve and procure more we have successfully raised 100,000 USD from the 2020 Walkathon. Who participated? By the end of our 10th annual walkathons, we have more than 3,000 people engaged who strived to express their solidarity in the fight against cancer; there’s truly no words for the dedication and perseverance with which our participants walked, bringing forth an astounding total of about 30,000 miles!! To everyone’s delight, the visionary founder and CEO of VT Seva, Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji, participated in the event with his run on October 22nd and encouraged us in our fight against cancer as part of this 10th anniversary milestone. What were the categories & who are the winners? All participants were divided into 3 categories as Men, Women and our four legged friends. In order to track said progress of the participants, VT Seva actually created a website in which they can log the respective miles walked and compete with each other for the most miles walked. We’ve had many winners that showed impressive drive and motivation and helped make this event a tremendous success! Men's Category Winners: Papaiahgari Vishnuvardhan - 515.14 miles Jagan Siva - 331.71 miles Poosarla GeethaPrasad – 275.72 miles Women's category Winners: Peechara Shobha – 363.57 miles Koduri SriGowri – 328.52 miles Shreya – 272.77 miles Four Legged Family: Cooper (Pet Dog of Shreya and Srivas) – 272.9 miles Julie (Pet Dog of Sriram and Lakshman) – 105.2 miles Arjun (Pet Dog of Radhika and SriNitya) – 28.5 miles All the winners received an amazing virtual medal to celebrate their accomplishments. These virtual medals were created by Aditi. Experience of winners in their own words Vishnuvardhan: “I walked in the memory of my uncle Kamatam Ramakrishna Reddy, who inspired me to be selfless and “Serve all Beings as a Service to God”. I also walked for Aparna Akka as she could not walk as much as she really wanted due to a foot injury. I walked in support of VT Seva’s for all the great work they do in keeping the general health of the women via cancer awareness programs. Jai Srimannarayana!” Sivaji: “I have always been empathetic towards cancer patients and as soon I was told by the VT team about the Walkathon and its purpose of increasing awareness of Cervical cancer, I was very happy to be part of this great cause. Though I usually walk a couple times a week for my personal fitness, this noble cause did encourage me to go extra miles every day for the past month. I would like to thank the VT Seva team wholeheartedly for organizing such a great event.” GeetaPrasad: “I am from Cary, NC. As part of my Engineering college Fitness group came to know about VT Seva virtual walkathon and wanted to be part of this great cause and contribute from my end. Wishing the very best for all your initiatives and truly inspiring work.” Shoba: “I dedicate this walk to my mother who passed away due to cancer. I love walking and I feel very happy going out and enjoying nature. I was motivated to walk almost 30 years ago when I watched the movie “Aswani”, a biopic of Aswini Nachappa, a famous runner from India. I have been supporting VT Seva activities for the past few years. Inspired by VT Seva services, I sponsored a few cancer screening camps through VT Seva. Congratulations to VT Seva on its 10th anniversary.” Gowri: “Many thanks to VT Seva for providing this opportunity- 30-day journey to become my healthiest self while running for a cause I believe in. It all started with a GOAL. At first, I set myself a goal of 150 miles!! Gradually I realized I could do more and increased it to 250. I am Passionate about VT Seva – I have been volunteering with VT Seva from 2008. I have personally participated in the Women Healthcare camp (Cancer Screening camp) in India.” Shreya: “I want to thank VTSeva for holding a Virtual Cancer Walkathon this year! I really appreciated the opportunity to once again support VTSeva as well as compete with others. I would like to give a big shout out to my brother as he would skateboard while I walked and my dog for constantly reminding me that it is time for me to walk. Thank you VTSeva for hosting this event and making it an experience anyone can enjoy!” 6 Helpful tips that the winners followed to increase their step count: To set a routine and follow it every day to stay consistent with your steps. Walk/Run with a podcast if you usually can’t walk/run for long. Walk/Run with a group to push yourself to run more. Don’t run on a full stomach, otherwise you will feel some discomfort when walking/running and you won’t be able to walk as much. Most Importantly, Have Fun! When you do it with a good mindset even the longest walks will feel short. A Bonus Tip: If you do have pets, try to make it a fun filled walk, by having them come along with you. Throughout the ten annual walkathons, the importance of healthy lifestyle choices in preventing cancer was accentuated by oncologists offering their valuable and impactful insight. Additionally, hundreds of VT Seva's youth demonstrated active leadership and participation by working to contribute towards research, presentation, and spreading information with teamwork and philanthropy in mind; they made the process more enjoyable and motivating for those walking and steadily making progress. The milestone was a huge celebration as 10 annual walkathons involved numerous events and talks from popular oncologists to spread awareness and our Dallas volunteers raising money towards research and prevention of Cervical Cancer every year. The culmination of the month-long walkathon was conducted with a virtual event fun filled event with our branch director, Priyatham ji welcome note, followed by our your emcees talking about health care pillar achievements in the USA year 2020. Dallas health director Ranga Manthena ji provided the history of the 10 years of Walkathons in Dallas. Special interview was conducted by Padama ji with Madhavi Ravindra ji (below), who is the head for leading cancer camps in India. Fun activities were also conducted by the youth board to engage the audience. Finally, VT Seva invited the Education Director Phani ji to talk about the education pillar and the impact that we have on it, as well as announce our next Tarangini (VT Seva Dallas Annual Event). All of this was possible because of the hardworking youth volunteers like Shreya , Aditi, Lashman, Pranamya, Sriram, Trisha, Arnav and Nikhilesh. • VT Seva Dallas presents 12th Annual Tarangini - 2021

Tarangini's motto is "One kind act can cause a ripple effect! Let's join in making one!!" Instead of cursing the darkness, we believe in lighting a lamp. The path we chose to accomplish this goal is to engage youngsters from Dallas community in Tarangini preparations and presentation to volunteer their talent (singing, dance, music, emcee skills etc) and time to raise awareness. Most of our youth leaders have firsthand experience in volunteering in local activities such as Cancer Awareness, Adopt a Street, Serving food to Homeless and at outreach projects in India such as schools and colleges for visually challenged and schools for underprivileged tribals. Because of these encouraging gestures by youth for the past 12 years, many kind hearts and philanthropists responded positively by pledging their support. This act of giving enables us in dispelling the darkness through Education. Our goal for this year is to support the education of at least 250 students from schools for tribals. Please donate by clicking HERE: Optionally you can also donate through Zelle. How ?: Please login into your bank portal, then choose Zelle payments and send your donation of $365 to treasurer@vtsworld.org. • 30 Middle Schoolers Benefit with Our Virtual Speech & Debate Club Workshop! Led by a Middle Schooler

In partnership with VT Seva Virginia Branch and her local middle school, Hrishita Mareddy, 14, conducted a Virtual Public Forum Speech and Debate Club Workshop open to all children in grades 6-8 for free. This debate club started on 10/13/2020 and ended on 10/31/2020 with a total of 9 sessions. Over this 3.5 week period, Hrishita taught over 30 middle school students public forum debate free of charge for 1.5-2 hours each session. “ Be the change you want to see in the world.” - Mahatma Gandhi Debate is expensive: Many students in low-income earning families do not have the resources nor the financial security to partake in certain extracurricular activities. Speech & Debate happens to be one of them. Debating coaching centers are expensive, researching is time consuming and may cost money, and to enter national competitions, debaters often pay hefty entry fees. The students that are fortunate to be practicing debating, myself including, know that trying out for the high-school debate team is scary-enough even with experience. Giving these kids the exposure they need early on can give them an upper-hand when competing against others, and improve their speaking skills Speech & Debate gives students: Advanced public speaking skills Practice with researching/finding credible and reliable sources A strong understanding of how to develop a clear line of argumentation Essay-writing skills Argumentative and oral skills Vast general knowledge A steady foundation to base a high school debate career Ahead of the game when competing with others for a spot in debate team tryouts College applications/resumé My sincere thanks to Abhishek Chennamaraju, VT Seva, Virginia and VT Seva National Communications team for their continued support before, throughout and after the workshop sessions. By the end of the club, students were able to create their own Pro and Con cases on a given resolution. They then battled their peers in a debate match, and gained firsthand experience in public speaking and debating. They also received individualized feedback and were given all of the resource slides used in the workshop sessions. Our suggested donation fee for this club was $20, and all proceeds went to VT Seva, an amazing organization. More on their wonderful charity and volunteer community service work here: https://www.vtsworld.org/ ~ Hrishita Mareddy More About Hrishita Mareddy Hrishita Mareddy (14) is a sophomore that attends Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland. She is currently in the International Baccalaureate Magnet Program, and will graduate in 2023. She has been debating for well over 4 years. Her initial interest in teaching debate began when she realized she wanted to start a club to help young students gain important skills for their college career. Speech and Debate improves presentational and oral skills, researching and argumentation, and general knowledge. She wants to thank the wonderful directors at VT Seva for giving her the opportunity to mentor. She had a blast teaching the young middle schoolers about Public Forum Debate, and cannot wait to continue the club next semester! VT Seva encourages and empowers youth to give back to the community and is very proud of volunteers like Hrishitha for utilizing their time and talent to help fellow students.

  • VT SEVA Detroit Youth Board's Outreach Project

This fall, 30 VT Seva youth members from Michigan joined forces to raise thousands of dollars for underprivileged children in India. They created an online fundraiser using GoFundMe to collect donations towards the cause. VT Seva is a non-profit volunteer organization which is mostly run with the help of the youth board. "The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention."—Oscar Wilde A team of 30, an ambitious goal, and a total of more than $7,000 raised. This fall, 30 members of the Michigan youth board started a fundraiser to raise money for the blind and tribal children of India. Due to the obstacles of COVID-19, RAAS, an annual fundraiser to raise money for these children, was canceled. We had to manage everything online in the form of Webex meetings, online fundraisers, and online group chats. All of the participants had to do most of the work alone due to the pandemic, which made it quite challenging. The main goal of their outreach project was to spread awareness about all the work that VTSeva does to help the visually challenged children in India. Our donations help the Nethra Vidyalaya schools for the visually challenged. It is a group of institutions focused on providing a value-based quality education, technology-assisted learning, and a self-reliant lifestyle to visually challenged kids. This fundraiser helps the students get high quality education and presents them with a better opportunity for success. The idea was thought of by 16 year old youth member Harish Jaisankar. By informing people about these students and VT Seva's mission to the people who are not aware of VT SEVA, the VT Seva Detroit Youth Board helped raise money for Nethra Vidyala students, their team raised $7,100. The cost of helping one blind child receive education for an entire year is $365, which means that together they helped over 19 visually challenged students. Just like any other great cause, it started out fairly slow. A goal was set that each participant must raise at least $50 which enabled them to encourage each participant to raise money. Their initial target was to raise $3000 in three weeks but by the eighth day of fundraising, they had already surpassed their goal. This led them to increase their goal to $6,600. However, they also exceeded their goal again on the 18th day. Finally, they increased their goal to $10,000, campaign is still going on. Every member who committed to the cause made sure they reached their personal goals. Their outreach project helped contribute to this cause as they put together their efforts to spread the word. The fundraiser lasted over the course of 21 days. Over the course of this time, members asked many people for donations through gofundme.com. It was a great way to gain experience, and be an active part of society. Our fundraiser and message reached well beyond the United States’s borders. For example, we got a number of donations from India and Australia. This project helped bring attention to our service group from foreign countries. All our participants helped spread the word of VTSEVA. Some of our participants took initiatives at school to spread the word even more. They hung up posters around their schools as well as asked their teachers to donate. Many teachers were incredibly interested and impressed by our generous cause. By doing this, our participants brought so much more attention to the visually impaired in India and VT SEVA's contribution. This project was supported by Youth Board members as young as eight years old. Adhip, Jansi, Chandini, and Ritvija are our youngest members and they helped raise a ton of money and bring awareness to our cause. We believe that leadership should start young and by helping collect donations, our four young members proved that leadership in youth is attainable. Youth is the backbone of our nation and it is our job to encourage them from a young age to grow and become responsible citizens. The members of our team shared their personal experiences and explained the feeling of being able to change lives and bring smiles to many faces. It took a lot of phone calls, text messages, and emails to reach people. Volunteers reflect on their personal experiences: Oviya, Saisha, and Risha talked about how rewarding the experience felt. Teja, Yasaswini, and Shreya explain how great the experience was for them. Sathvik, Abhinav, Nikhil, and Harish say they are grateful for the opportunity. Teja, Yasaswini, and Shreya explain how great the experience was for them. Sanjana, Rashmita, and Jansi explain their joy of giving “During the journey of Go Funding I found true generous donors who gave silently without hope of reward!! I appreciate them!”—Niharika, Chandini, and Arya “I am very happy that I was able to contribute towards the education of the students in Netra Vidyalaya. The experience has made me become more compassionate towards not so privileged people.” discuss Adhip, Aishani, Amogh “This project taught me how to reach out to people. I am very proud that I was a part of something that helped so many kids.” — Shrikha, Nikita, Ritvija “Even during this time, I was really glad that I was able to reach society and explain to them what VTSeva is and how we help. Every time when I got the donation it made me feel really happy.” as written by Kaavya, Soham, and Srihari Siddharth, Sohan, and Vaibhav reflect, “This fundraiser gave me the opportunity to raise awareness for a great cause. I am really grateful to be part of this wonderful organization.” “Being a part of this fundraiser made me realize how much one person can impact such a big society.”—Anagha, and Srujan Overall, our outreach program helped bring a lot of awareness to VT Seva and our cause, enabling us to help visually impaired children attain better education and future. Seeing all the smiles on these kids's faces brought joy to all of us. “Giving is not just about making a donation, it's about making a difference.” - Kathy Calvin. The experiences of our participants show that each and every one of them are very grateful to the donors and VT Seva for giving them this opportunity. The six-weeks were split into three 2-week sprints, where we focused on basics, techniques, and game scenarios, respectively. Closing ceremony was conducted with a scrimmage between all the kids. In the ceremony, VT Seva Youth and Seattle Board shared about VT Seva's activities, and invited the families to join to help serve more people in need. Because the need is huge and we need everyone to step forward. Participants were presented commemorative wristbands for the program followed by nice refreshments. Cricket Coaching was an opportunity for the kids to get a safe, active outlet during the pandemic which was enjoyed by the participants and Youth Volunteers while knowing their effort is leading to support Schools for Tribals and Schools for Visually challenged in India raising $ 2500 towards the cause. We thank Varnon Srinivasan, Neha Aitharaju, Pavan Kotti, Vivek Chilakala, Samvit Garg, Kavya Yeremelli, Arnav Thappesandra, Sumedha Kanumuri, Adam D’mello, Rishi Sharma, Shyam Ramesh and VT Seva Seattle Leadership Team for collaborating on planning and execution of the program. - By Srihari Krishnaswamy, Hi All, I’m Srihari Krishnaswamy, I’m the Sports Lead at VTS Seattle, and have been with the branch for the past 2 years now. I first joined near the end of 2018, and like many of the volunteers at VTS Seattle, I was captivated by the branch’s effectiveness in accomplishing goals and wanted to help them make a difference. I was first exposed to JET at a very young age, and had the opportunity to meet Swami Ji. I have always loved the game of cricket, whether I was playing in leagues in the US, or watching India dominate from thousands of miles away. The sport has allowed me to make so many meaningful connections and learn how to be accountable and lead effectively. I started playing when I was about 9. Along the way, I learned meaningful drills, strategies, and techniques that I knew I could pass onto others. VT SEVA Cricket gave my peers and me an opportunity to do that, and we could not be more thankful. We knew that we had potential to provide an increase of outreach and donations for VTS and are glad that we were able to do that in our own type of way. Reflecting on the fact that we were able to further the game with younger kids, while also enabling the underprivileged in India learn in school was truly heartwarming.

  • Stitch & Fix – Meet Ananya, Our Youth Volunteer

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” Oscar Wilde VT Seva team is proud to present one of our amazing youth volunteers - Ananya Suthram. This Middle Schooler proves, it is the intention to help others that matters, and you can easily find a way. Lets hear how she made a difference in her own words: This journey started with my interest in stitching, and the desire to help those in need, especially in these challenging times of Covid-19. I started sewing masks and taking orders for minor fixes and altering pant lengths, with the intention of raising funds. For every article of clothing I mend, I asked for a suggested donation of $5 or more. At the end of summer, I raised a total of $365, which was donated to support education of one student from Schools for Visually Challenged / Schools for Tribals supported by VT Seva for a year. Thanks to my mother, who was the inspiration behind this project, and the rest of my family who supported me through my journey. I would also like to thank all the people who donated and encouraged my efforts, for I couldn’t have reached my goal without them. I was delighted to know that my endeavors also inspired another person to stitch as well. Together we stitched masks and donated them. - Ananya Suthram – VT SEVA Seattle Wishing many more years of joyful service Ananya! Hello! My name is Ananya Suthram and I am at my last year in middle school at Issaquah, WA. My hobbies include sewing, coding, dancing, and skating. I have been serving with VT SEVA Seattle branch for seven years, through UTSAV, and many other volunteering activities. I originally joined VT SEVA because I found it amazing to see other people my age working hard to give back to the society, they live in. I am proud to say that I am a part of this great organization. VT Seva empowers youth to own and lead Volunteering events from a very young age.

  • VT SEVA Covid Volunteer Activity Report-Seattle Youth team

Two projects, Grocery Delivery Project & 13 Day Shred—VTSEVA Report Due to the drastic societal effects of this global pandemic, the Grocery Delivery Project and the 13 Day Shred were created in order to help engage and support a multitude of families and communities. Throughout the 13 Day Shred, families and kids were able to participate in engaging workouts at home despite a majority of gyms being closed. The Grocery Delivery Project was crafted to acquire non-perishable food items as donations for the community as many Americans are currently suffering to makes ends meet because of the pandemic. Thank you to our volunteers (Aakarsh Dhilip, Pranav Nair, and Chinmay Koimuttum) who have worked hard to organize these programs to work as effectively as possible. We created these programs to be as easily accessible as possible, making it convenient for anyone who wished to participate in them. For the Grocery Delivery Project, volunteers advertised the program through various different avenues in order to reach as many potential participants as possible. Over the course of 4 weeks, participants left their food donations by their front doors for our volunteers to pick up every Saturday. These donations would then all be donated to Northwest Harvest on specific dates. In total, The Grocery Delivery Project was able to reach 46 families, and with the support of all of our participants, was able to donate 1560 lbs worth of donations. The 13 Day Shred was a workout program that occurred over the course of one month. With adequate rest days in between for recovery, the program involved 13 exercise videos catered to participants of all fitness levels. The exercises involved little to no equipment, allowing for anyone to participate. The videos also entailed nutrition segments which provided helpful nutrition tips and advice for participants. Thank you, Chinmay Koimuttum VTSEVA Seattle Jai Srimannarayana! My name is Chinmay Koimuttum, and I have been on the VTSEVA youth board for two years. I was drawn into VTSEVA by witnessing the support and guidance that the youth board is provided with by all of our adults and mentors. This guidance and inspiration are what motivated me to help run the 13 Day Shred and the Grocery Delivery Project. I am extremely thankful to both Aakarsh and Pranav, as well as everyone who participated and volunteered to make these programs successful. My name is Pranav, and I worked alongside other members of VTSEVA to take part in "The 13 Day Shred". I was interested in helping create videos for this series because I found it hard to continuously exercise during the past few months, so I wanted to eliminate this problem for others. By providing exercise videos every couple of days, people will stay motivated to keep fit during these times. I also took part in the Grocery Delivery program. I was motivated to help because I knew that I was making a positive difference in our community. While delivering food does not sound complicated, it helps many people who previously did not have access to the amount of food that many of us take for granted. Hello! My name is Aakarsh and I have had the privilege of serving on the VTSeva youth board for the past two years. My association with VTSeva has not only helped me embrace and understand the true spirit of volunteerism, but more importantly, VTSeva has allowed me to truly grasp the meaning of empathizing with the people around us. With every initiative that is carried out, the transformative impact that is created on countless lives make the VTSeva experience a fulfilling, cathartic journey. During the Covid-19 pandemic, I and a few of my VTSeva friends created the Grocery Delivery Project with the intention of providing non-perishable food donations to those reeling from the effects of the pandemic. We executed this plan by picking up donations from the doorstep of interested donors and delivering those donations to local food banks while abiding to all Covid-19 health guidelines. We were blessed to have raised over 1500 pounds of donations during the course of our project and we are proud that our small efforts contributed towards putting food on someone’s plate during these tough times. During this pandemic, I also co-created the 13-day shred program which was designed to motivate people to work out during the pandemic by providing videos, every other day, of simple workouts for people of all ages. Our goal with this program was to encourage our viewers to adopt a healthier lifestyle and instill the discipline of working out on a continual basis. THANK YOU

  • Bharat and Her History—VTSEVA Youth Report

During this pandemic, Bharat and Her History was created in order to provide an easy way for families and kids to learn about Indian history. Classes were structured and created in an easily understandable format, allowing for people of all ages to be able to engage with the classes in a meaningful way. Through this program, we managed to teach 60 families about Indian history from the ancient times all the way to the beginnings of the colonial era. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers and teachers (Kiran Vangala, Chinmay Koimuttum, and Swadesh Sistla) for devoting many hours to organizing, planning, and preparing the classes and lesson plans. The PowerPoints and presentations were designed in a way to be both informative, captivating, and entertaining for the kids and families that joined these classes. Once a week, over the course of four weeks, we were able to present segments of Indian history in a concise and chronologically sound format. Classes covered significant wars, inner politics, external politics, major empires and dynasties, exceptional heroes, significant kings and queens, foreign invasions, indigenous resistance, and many aspects of Indian history that are quite substantial to India’s history but remain undiscussed. It is our hope that these classes would inspire and trigger a spark of desire to learn more about the plethora that is Indian history. We also wish that it would provide some inspiration for the youngsters present to delve deeper into the history of their own ancestors and culture, allowing them to remain connected to the ethos of India despite living abroad. Thanks to our partnership with JETUSA, we were able to connect with families all over the country, allowing the impact of this program to extend beyond the boundaries of Seattle. It is our hope that this program impacted and inspired the families and youth watching to learn more about the history of India. Thank you, Chinmay Koimuttum VTSEVA Seattle Jai Srimannarayana! My name is Chinmay Koimuttum, and I have been on the VTSEVA youth board for two years. One of the many incredible aspects of VTSEVA that I love is the support and guidance that the youth board is provided with by all of our adults and mentors. I initially fell in love with Indian history after learning about the marvelous life of Maharana Pratap, which eventually led me to explore further about the history of India. • VT SEVA Seattle Virtual Reading Report Sessions

Amidst the recent pandemic, VT SEVA’s Seattle branch came together to create Virtual Reading for Kids, a program made to support families affected by the stay-at-home order in which entertainment, daycare, and other child services were limited. Through the program, we not only provided a fun and engaging activity for kids bi-weekly, but also raised money for VT SEVA’s Covid Relief Fund from participating families. Twice a week, volunteers of all ages came to read stories from picture books to Indian classic comics to short chapter books over Webex. Through our program’s webpage, children from across the nation were able to easily join sessions from our online links and enjoy a virtual read-along from the comfort of their home. Through our efforts we were able to attract kids from Washington, Ohio, California, North Carolina, Texas, and many more. Furthermore, we attracted many passionate volunteers ranging from adults to elementary students eager to converse and support others in their community during these stressful times — in turn, increasing VT SEVA’s footprint across households previously unaware of the organization. Madhavi Vivek VT SEVA Seattle Hello, my name is Madhavi Vivek and I am a rising senior at Liberty High School in Renton, Washington. In my free time I like to swim, attend hackathons, and travel. I joined VT Seva in 2016 and have been a part of the youth board ever since. I was drawn to VT Seva because I resonated with their mission statement and believed they could provide me with many opportunities to work alongside like-minded individuals passionate about giving back to their community through service. I am glad to be a part of this team and be able to contribute through programs like the Virtual Reading Program in which I led this year. • Virtual Coding With Compassion Program by VT Seva Seattle !!

Amidst the recent pandemic, VTSEVA’s Seattle branch collaborated to create Coding With Compassion, an online program made to support students affected by the stay-at-home order and challenge them to continue using their problem-solving and interpersonal skills. Through this program, we taught 100 students various programming languages and leadership skills needed in the work industry and raised money to provide underprivileged children with a free education. Thank you to our flawless teachers and volunteers (Kiran Vanagala, Santhi Kanumuri, Sethu Srinivasan, Praveen Bantwal, Upendar Sandadi, Pavan Vovveti, Priyatham Burgadda, Uttam Indukuri, and Aditi Srinivasan) who put in countless hours making lesson plans for different age groups throughout the entire summer. We created weekly curriculum's, slideshows, and various activities that would keep the kids engaged in both aspects: coding and leadership. Twice a week, teen and adult volunteers taught students coding languages such as Python, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript over a course of a few months on Webex. Along with these technical courses, a leadership curriculum was incorporated to equip students with the essential interpersonal skills required to work in a group environment successfully. Children from across the nation were able to sign up through our website and enjoy coding/leadership lessons from the comfort of their homes. It was remarkable to know that our lessons on both these disciplines would serve as a strong foundation for the kids’ diverse future goals and endeavors regardless of their chosen field. With our online presence, we were able to attract kids from Washington, Texas, California, Nevada, Ohio, North Carolina, and many more. Furthermore, many participating kids were motivated to follow in the footsteps of our volunteers and support others in their community, increasing VTSEVA’s footprint across households throughout the nation. Thank You, Aditi Srinivasan VTSEVA Seattle ! I am Aditi, and I have been a youth board Lead at VTSEVA Seattle for four years. At first, I joined this unique organization as a selfless volunteer after being inspired by my grandfather. He continued to help his community by being the Secretary of the Indian Red Cross even during his retirement life. What really drove me to stay committed for multiple years at VTSEVA was the open-mindedness of the adults who respected and incorporated the youth’s ideas into our events and the variety of societal issues we address: education, healthcare, disaster relief, etc. Coding has always been one of my interests. I have recently been passionate about conducting research at the intersection of computer science and linguistics to create technology that effectively bridges gaps in communication. It was such an honor to establish and organize the Coding With Compassion program alongside our adult volunteers and pass on my programming knowledge to such bright and promising kids. The fact that the money we raised through this program helps underprivileged children pursue their education makes this experience twice as satisfying! Volunteering shouldn’t be about the service hours required for school or the National Presidential Service Award. It should come from the heart, and I hope to see many more youth join VTSEVA, bring ideas to the table, and create a memorable impact on our community! Our Team

  • Virtual Dancing Classes by VT Seva Seattle !!

VT Seva Seattle Youth team conducted several virtual classes during this pandemic. They worked to in ensuring that all family members are engaged and entertained during the stay-at-home orders. One of the classes was virtual dance lessons. Every Saturday, volunteers from Seattle’s youth board would choreograph and virtually teach portions of a song to people of all ages. With classes being virtual, our program was able to attract participants from across the nation, including states like Washington, California, Georgia, and many more. By offering an opportunity to engage with others virtually, VT Seva gained the attention of many participants ( Parents and Kids ) for their unique approach and their estimable efforts. As a result, VT Seva gained many new youth and adult volunteers eager to support our organization's mission. Thank you to all of those that participated in the Dance With Us program. We hope that you are all doing well and staying safe. Thank you, Esha Bantwal VT Seva Seattle Hello everyone! My name is Esha Bantwal and I have been on VT Seva’s youth board for two years and have been a volunteer for several more. I have also been a part of VT Seva’s unique summer internship opportunity in which groups of young volunteers get to visit the Indian remote villages that VT Seva supports. Our purpose was to teach the children there English and instead we learned a lot more lessons about life! My involvement with VT Seva started because of my visits to India. Unfortunately, there are pockets of the population that do not get the necessities they should have. Seeing these people and the circumstances they live in for years on end pushed me to make a change. And, I decided to start small by joining VT Seva. VT Seva’s unique mission and my own desire to help those in need worldwide attracted me to this organization. It is not only Indian underprivileged and visually-challenged children that VT Seva supports, but also people (of all ages and ethnicities) suffering from natural disasters, diseases (e.g. breast cancer), and poverty. Through VT Seva I have had wonderful opportunities to serve my community; one of them being through dance. Dance has been something I’ve invested my time into since I was seven years old. It’s something I enjoy doing and has become a part of my routine. That being said, I’m very happy that I got to be a part of Dance with Us alongside Aditi, another youth board volunteer, to teach and engage others through dance. In addition to dance and other activities, volunteering has become a part of my routine. And, the fact that many young dancers who joined this summer’s virtual dance program are eager to do the same makes it all the better. Young leaders are always welcome at VT Seva and I hope to see more of you all joining soon! Few glimpses of the classes are below

  • Sucessful 3rd Annual Public Speaking Event - VT Seva Detroit

VT Seva Detroit conducted the 3rd Annual Public Speaking event on Sunday August 09, 2020. This year it was little bit different with hosting a workshop (inplace of a competition) by the experienced ToastMasters and a session for Guidelines on Remote Learning to acclimate the current pandemic situation. “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek” – Barrack Obama. One of the appropriate quote for the current situation. By participanting in this event students received information and resources that needed for remote schooling and acquiring the crucial skill that they need for their life “Public Speaking”. Many thanks to Gaurav Talwar, Surya Machetti and Lorrie Williams for their time and sharing their expertise with the students. Awesome presentations by 3 of them. Timekeeping is the challenging task for any event, thanks to Jaisankar Kannan for being our time keeper and make sure we were on track. In this workshop, students were able to present their prepared speech and get an individualized feedback from the experts. Registration Fee from this event went to NethraVidyala school. We are proud to announce that with the registration fees and additional sponsorship we were able to sponsor one students’ education for one whole year. • Virtual Cooking Classes by VT Seva Seattle Youth

In the course of the past few months, Seattle's VT Seva Youth Board held virtual cooking classes every week to support families across the country during the pandemic. Our mission through this program was to alleviate stress among families by hosting a welcoming and interactive environment online. Through our Virtual Cooking Class program, we created a safe space where communities could come together to socialize and share their experiences over great cooking and baking recipes. Every Saturday afternoon, we held a cooking class hosted by our many VT Seva Youth volunteers. Each volunteer shared one of their favorite recipes to others across the nation, allowing for families to adopt new cooking techniques and recipes to keep them engaged at home. We were delighted to meet with participants from across the country, prompting us to expand our volunteers and continue our classes. Through this successful program, we were able to elicit interest in not only our program, a fun and productive way to spend time during the stay-at-home order, but our VT Seva organization as well. Thank you, Sumedha Kanumuri VTSEVA Seattle Website: https://virtualcookingclasses.weebly.com/ Hi! My name is Sumedha Kanumuri and I am a rising junior at Skyline High School in Sammamish, WA. I have been part of the Seattle VTSEVA Youth Board for about 1 year now and I have participated and volunteered in several annual events and fundraisers these past years. Outside of VTSEVA, I enjoy rowing and being creative whether it’s through drawing, small projects or cooking. I love to cook and bake at h ome and I was inspired to lead the VTSEVA Virtual Cooking Classes to share some of my recipes as well as learn new ones from other kids. I enjoyed creating a safe, virtual environment in order for kids to have fun and also bring a smile to their faces during these hard times. As a person, I strongly believe in having an interactive and strong community whether it is virtually or in-person. My experiences with the VTSEVA youth board and the cooking classes has helped me with building that goal. Pictures from our Virtual Classes:

  • Youth Volunteers supporting the Front Liners in Livonia St. Mary Mercy Hospital

Amidst this pandemic, 10 young youth board members from VT Seva raised more than 5,000 dollars together with hard work, passion, and persistence. 10 kids from VT Seva Detroit Youth Board, started an online fundraiser using GoFundMe.com –VT Seva is a non-profit volunteer organization which is mostly run with the help of the youth board. During these unprecedented times, they all knew that most people are helpless, the orders are to stay home, and stay put. They knew they had to do something for the frontliners who are risking their lives everyday. This idea was thought of by one of the youth board member Harish Jaisankar, who then readily shared his idea with the others. Together everyone agreed that this was the best way for them to help out was only possible by staying apart. As Livonia has the second highest number of COVID - 19 cases in Michigan they decided to support the St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, MI. The ten of them quickly began putting in efforts, spreading the word as much as they could, starting an online fundraiser, and making it their goal to make a difference. It started out fairly slow, just like any other large project does. But they kept persisting, and over the next couple of days they started to hit it off. They reached their first $1,000. Harish, Oviya, Saisha, Kaavya, Anagha, Amogh, Abhinav, Hrudya and Nikita are the ambitious 10 who made this possible. Over this journey, they pushed and pushed until they reached the peak of their mountain. The results were shocking. People who weren’t even reached out to, donated to the cause. They finally raised more than their goal of 5,000 dollars. Their goal was only achieved with the hard work put in by all of the youth board...even while they were stuck at home. They put in all of their effort to get people to donate, and raise their spirits. Posting all over social media, creating hashtags, sharing with friends, family, school clubs and many others. They put effort, and precious time to convince people to donate to this wonderful cause, and pass on the message. Together they were able to make a difference in this world, and help those around them to be safer and healthier. It was a small step, but a step in the right direction nevertheless. The kids who came up with this project had many things to say about it: “This experience has been great and it feels amazing to support those risking their lives to keep us safe. I’ve seen the stories about how hard it has been for the medical professionals and they deserve all the support they can get”—Harish Jaisankar. Youngest member of this team Oviya Jaisankar says: “This campaign expanded my horizons in reaching out to people and I’m proud of supporting the frontliners.” Saisha Srivatsan, another important part of the committee, explains her thoughts. “Every bit I do to help the community during this pandemic makes me feel really good. It feels amazing to be able to help during these times.” “Helping in raising money for the doctors and nurses gave me satisfaction and hope that this pandemic will end soon.”, exclaimed by Kaavya Naga Sri Karnati. “During this pandemic, any small effort will go a long way. It feels amazing to help in the situation it was most needed, yet again another member.”Anagha Jammalamadaka. “I’m very grateful to the kind people who donated to our campaign and to the doctors who are fighting against COVID-19.” - Abhinav Suresh. Sohan Madishetty describes his thoughts, “I was happy to be a part of this fundraiser. It was a difficult challenge but I am happy that we succeeded.” “It was a great opportunity and it was better knowing that I could be helpful at a time when people need it.” reflected by Nikita Talwar. Amogh Pisipati said “We were able to raise thousands of dollars for the frontliners. I would do this again if I was given the opportunity.” Last but not least, “Glad to be part of this campaign.” reflected Hrudya Kishore. This money will be used to buy more and better supplies such as no touch thermometers, which will further prevent the spread of the virus, and keep everyone safer. These youths were also able to reach out to a local news channel —WXYZ-TV news—who later interviewed them, and talked about what they were doing for their community. Soon after the interview went live, the numbers immediately showed a difference, many new people in the area donated to the cause. This interview brought the amount one large step closer to the goal. The publicity from this interview would definitely be one of the predominant things that brought them a much closer to their goal. It also shows that so far the direction they were moving towards was affirmatively moving in the right direction. In addition to admiring the individuals, they’ve inspired Rotary Interact Club of Livonia Churchill high school to donate a huge chunk of money. This campaign did bring the community together for a good cause. When they had finally reached their goal they then were asked by MI India for an interview to talk about everything they had done to accomplish their goal. By giving this interview, it gave each and every one of them an opportunity to really look back how much work they put in to achieve their goal. MI India Interview link: https://www.miindia.com/blog/details/Youth-Warriors-from-VT-Seva-fight-against-COVID-19-1025 St. Mary Mercy was so inspired about this campaign and wanted to reach out to these kids to thank them and answer any questions they had, since the high schoolers were having AP exams, to accommodate their schedule, St. Mary Mercy representatives scheduled an interview on the weekend and expressed their gratitude to these kids and answered all the healthcare related questions around COVID-19 that these kids asked. Kids got very helpful insights from the source directly through this interview. With the money raised, it helped St. Mary Mercy to purchase 600 N-95 Masks 550 Face Shields 2 Air - Purifying Respirators 1 UV Decontomination chamber for PPEs To think about it, 10 kids, 1 idea, 1 month, and 5,000 dollars that were raised, this small-time project definitely went farther than anything anyone could’ve imagined. It sounds almost impossible to reach at first, but together they did it. As everyone knows, the fruit of hard work, and patience, is always the sweetest. These 10 youths put together a nice thank you video to convey their appreciation to all of the donors for this campaign GoFundMe Fundraiser link: https://gf.me/u/x3umtyhttps://gf.me/u/x3umty Written By: Nikitha Talwar & Saisha Srivatsan Video: Harish Jaisankar

  • VT Seva Detroit Youth Board Appreciates Essential Workers

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. ~John F. Kennedy Over the duration of these past two weeks, VT Seva’s Detroit Youth Program has been showing their gratitude towards essential workers: waste disposal crew and mailmen/women. Children ranging from elementary to high school came up with different ways to appreciate the people who are still out there working during these unprecedented times. VT Seva is a non-profit organization which runs on its youth board. Many youth volunteers made hand-made cards and/or gave gift cards to let these people know that they are noticed and appreciated by their community. For us kids, it was incredible to be able to make someone’s day through a small gesture. This project also helped to inspire each other to impact the people around us positively, and take a moment to appreciate the ones who serve us, especially during this pandemic. It is important to express gratitude towards the ones around us and to lend a helping hand towards them. Whether it be through making a card, or by baking large portions of food to give to the people working all hours at the hospital, make sure you also spread kindness and positivity. Some of the youth volunteers’ shared their reflections on this project, and their experiences. Saisha talks about her experience; “Each time we delivered something, it was nice to see the smiles behind the masks. Every bit I do makes me feel really good and I want to continue doing similar things like this in the future". Nikita talks about how it’s better to do something, than nothing. Cheering up front liners, making people happy by appreciating them is just as important social distancing and keeping ourselves safe. Risha talks about how it’s astonishing that a group of youth volunteers can make someone else’s day through simple gestures, and be able to show these people that they are recognized by their community. Ish and Adi also made homemade cards and felt happy to see the trash disposal workers happy. Sadana and Srihari discuss how it was amazing to make such a small gesture, nothing compared to the hard and risk-filled work they do, and make someone very happy with it. Teja and Arya, who are youth volunteers, describe how happy they felt to see how they made someone else happy, and hopes to put more smiles on peoples faces during this pandemic. Oviya and Harish also participated talking about how they thoroughly enjoyed being a part of such an inspiring community and how satisfying it is to make someone smile. Ria and Vaibhav feel very thankful to be able to make an impact on their community. Sanjana and Kaavya talk about how happy they were to make someone smile. Aishani and Amitesh felt very happy supporting the community. Anjana, Shriya and Nikhil said their mail carriers felt so happy and appreciated the gesture. Smriti and Sohan feel happy to be part of an inspiring effort like this one. Rashmita and Abhinav also mentioned how they took all of the necessary precautions and were still able to inspire people in their community. All of the volunteers feel thankful that they got to make someone feel important and to be able to encourage others to spread gratitude too. Overall, all of the volunteers agree that it was a new and fun experience, and it felt wonderful to make someone happy, and make them feel better about themselves. It shows how a simple gesture can have such a great impact, and how it is important to appreciate those who work hard for you everyday, but are rarely ever acknowledged for it. Some may say that during a crisis like this giving 20 bucks to someone will not make any difference, but in the VT Seva Detroit Youth group alone, around 25 kids have participated so far and impacted more than 50 families. And it only takes one person to make a difference. Everyone can make someone’s day, make them feel important, and make them feel noticed by making a small effort during the day just like these volunteers. Not only is staying safe and taking precautions important, but spreading positivity is just as important to help everyone recover from this disaster together. VT Seva is a non-profit volunteer organization which runs mainly through its youth board, and raises money mainly for the education of blind and tribal children. But it also raises money for other causes such as cancer awareness camps and disasters such as the one going on right now. Writers : Nikita Talwar and Risha Narayanan Video : Srujan Patil

  • My first volunteering experience with VT Seva

On a day not so long ago, I was doing my school homework. Suddenly, my father asked me if I wanted to volunteer with VT Seva on the next Sunday, March 8, 2020. I asked, “I have a Prajna class until 12:00. How will I be able to go?” He said this event will start at 1:00, so if I wanted to go, I could go. I was happy that I would be able to start my volunteering hours, and people will benefit from my work. That Sunday, after the class was over at 12:00, we drove to Midway United Methodist Church, since that was where we would be doing our service. The organization was called Meals for Grace. At the church, Our job was to pick out the good fruits and vegetables in the packs and pack them up in boxes for the poor. Adithya and I worked on the vegetables. We volunteered to deliver the food. Soon, we reached the family’s home and gave them food. They were very thankful. After I came home, I felt great that I helped a family. I want to do many more activities like this. Thank you VT Seva and Meals for Grace for giving me this wonderful opportunity!

  • Who is benefiting with my volunteering?

My name is Charishma Bijum. I am a rising freshman who will be going to Alliance Academy for Innovation. I have been a part of VT Seva Atlanta since March 2019. Volunteering through VT Seva has taught me a variety of lessons and has helped me form friendships with people who I have never met. In the last year, I have learned to become a better person, and volunteering has inspired me to be grateful for what I have. There are a variety of events that I enjoy such as packaging food at Open Hands of Atlanta, organizing an American Red Cross Blood Drive, and packing food for celebrating International Yoga Day. VT Seva has motivated me to volunteer in my community and help those in need. VT Seva has helped many in need and has provided many people with hope. Volunteering indirectly helped me to become a happier person. In conclusion, volunteering has changed me to become a passionate and thankful young adult.

  • Together we serve with VT Seva - A youth volunteer's recount

It was a chilly Sunday morning in March. My dad woke me up to go to my 6:30 AM Rudram class. I was sleepy, cranky and felt like it was still 5:30 AM. There was a reason unknown to me for my grumpiness. Guess what! It was the first day of daylight savings time where you advance your clocks by an hour. Since I was still sleepy I had to literally drag myself out of bed. I was in a grumpy mood till my dad said I would be volunteering at VT Seva and that my best friend Rikhil would be joining me. Adithya and Rikhil volunteering before COVID-19 outbreak. Around 1:00 PM that afternoon, my dad drove me and Rikhil to the United Midway Methodist church located in Alpharetta. There we met Sandhya Auntie and Rani Auntie who were the coordinators of the event and the rest of the volunteers. And as a bonus, we even got our own VT Seva shirts! We put the new t-shirts on and headed into the church to our assigned fruit stations. You see, there were too many people working at the fruit station, so I and Rikhil were assigned the veggie station instead. We checked the veggies to see if they were fresh and of the best quality. Then we made veggie kit bags for the families to use and organized all the packed kits into cardboard boxes. After we were done packing the food, the event-in-charge provided us with directions for delivering their food. They have provided a sheet of paper with the details and address of the family to which we were asked to deliver the food. Then I and Rikhil helped my dad to load all the boxes into the car and drove to their address. The family we were assigned was a family of four kids aged 2,5,7 and 11 supported by a single mom struggling to live independently. We handed over the food to her and bade her a good day. It was a wonderful feeling. I felt blessed that I didn’t have to worry about where my food was coming from. I felt happy that I helped a family who was worrying about what their next meal was. It felt like we were all Vasudhaika Kutumbakam, a big family, helping each other. All in all, it was the most productive Sunday I’ve ever had. - Driving to the event venue for 1 hour,  -Spending time packing 3 hours,  -Putting smiles on others' faces is priceless.  I feel fortunate that I got this opportunity to volunteer with VT Seva and I look forward to another event just like this one. THANK YOU VT SEVA!!!!!!! Adithya Karthik Upadhyayula and Rikhil Sai Duvvuri are 6th Graders from Atlanta.
